Kelly and Banario meet for OneFC featherweight strap at OneFC 6
Sat Sep 01, 2012 5:21 pm
Coming off a brilliant KO performance of former UFC champion Jens Pulver, fast rising featherweight Eric Kelly now has a date with destiny. Kelly, who has ripped through his competition with OneFC will meet Honario Banario for the featherweight championship at OneFC 6, October 6th, 2012 in Singapore.
Kelly has played the part with the promotion. The Filipino made quick work of Mitch Chilson in the promotions inaugural event, before dominating Bae Young Kwon at OneFC 4. Following these two victories, Kelly found himself in a fight that had title implications against former UFC champion Jens Pulver.
Pulver proved no match for Kelly. After becoming acclimated to Pulver, it wasn’t long before he had Pulver’s number, knocking him out in the second round, securing his shot.
Banario did not fair as well as his newly found opponent against Bae Young Kwon. Kwon submitted Banario in their fight, less than a minute into the bout, handing the Filipino his first loss. Recovering strongly and stylishly, Banario put it on Andrew Benibe at OneFC 5, finishing his fellow countrymen with a brilliant display of striking.
THe match comes as the Philipine nation is experiencing a monumental surge in the sport of mixed martial arts. A native countryman as champion will no doubt allow them to hold an entirely different status, going forward. Holding the belt will be a great feat, however, the honor of becoming the first OneFC featherweight champion will be an accomplishment that one of the two men will carry with them the rest of their lives.
OneFC 6 takes place October 6th, 2012 in Singapore.
