Rickson Gracie APPRECIATION thread
Fri Dec 23, 2011 3:48 pm
The MAN the MYTH the LEGEND
THE most influential man in JMMA history
Some key points in his career:
Post away photos and fight videos!
^ Rickson don't play that shit
Choking out the supposed best Japanese Catch Wrestler
Flexin' dem muscles after tapping Takada earning the second easiest paycheck of his career; The first was tapping Takada in the first fight
THE most influential man in JMMA history
Some key points in his career:
- Is undefeated as a fighter
- Won the Vale Tudo Japan 94 and 94 events promoted by the Internation Shooto Commission
- The 95 tournament is where he choked out one of Masahiko Kimura's grandchildren and choked out Yuki Nakai
- After he dominated Yuki Nakai, Yuki was absolutely stunned by his technique. Yuki realized Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the ultimate Martial Art. Keep in mind Yuki Nakai trained in Judo, Shooto and Catch.
- Yuki brought BJJ to Japan thanks to Rickson
- Savagely beat down Yoji Anjoh proving once again Pro Wrestlers CANT FIGHT.
- Because he beat the dog shit out of Yoji Anjoh, some promoters and some guy naked Nobuhiko Takada started an event called KRS-PRIDE but I'm sure you MMA noobs have never heard of it
- Armbarred a scared Takada with ease, giving us more evidence that Pro Wrestlers cant fight
- Got a rematch. Armbar. Paycheck.
- Got a fight versus Catch Wrestling legend Masakatsu Funaki in a fight that is THE BIGGEST EVENT in JMMA history and solidified his place in the MMA world. Yeah, Pride 2000 GP ain't got shit on C2K.
- Retired in 2009
Post away photos and fight videos!

LOL IQ is not gonna be too happy about this.
I have to say besides the catch trolling, it's pretty good thread. Rickson was a notorious Sakuraba ducker, but he was one of the major personalities that defined the classic JMMA scene. It wouldn't be the same without him. Plus he was a character in VPW 2.
"get in my guard, bitch"

Nope this was to honor a MMA legend in Rickson who doesn't get enough recognition for what he did because he didn't work for Zuffa. Isn't that what this board is about?

Rickson is a legend, just too bad that his Pride career was so short, would've loved to see him fight a prime Shamrock or a prime Saku

I would've bought the thread if it wasn't for th whole "pro wrestlers can't fight." I am up for a catch vs. bjj debate, since this is one of my favorite topics with deep history, but disguising it as a "Rickson tribute thread" is bad taste.
Or at least admit you wanna talk about it, why play it off? Let's argue bjj vs. catch in the Rickson thread..

Well Rickson is great, but I'm just gon point out that there were pro wrestlers who could fight back then, like Minoru Suzuki, Ken Shamrock, Sakuraba, Volk han and FUnaki, who was good, but who had 50 fights before RIckson and god knows how many puro matches. It's too bad Rickson didn't get to fight these guys (except Funaki, which was a good fight indeed)

Rickson is really a great BJJ fighter. But the truth is he ducked many competition to keep his record (Funaki might have been his best, but he was old and fucked up, at that time he didn't looked anything like that guy in Pancrase) and of course the over 400 hundred matches he claims he won made him be seen as a clown in his homecountry, but at the end of the day he stills a great BJJ fighter and teacher and no one disputes that.
He helped the JMMA scene too and really is a legendary figure, but not one of the GOATS.
IQ, take it easy man, BJJ and Catch are both great. We are all one.

All of the opinions in MMA as to Rickson being a ducker or whatever aside, there are two extremely important things to take into account about his BJJ skills.
Number 1: The guy that co-founded the martial art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu said right up until the time of his death that Rickson had the best technique, the best mental game and is the best BJJ player ever.
Number 2: Any world champion BJJ player that has rolled with Rickson says the same thing as the co-founder od BJJ. That Rickson is on a completely different level even at the age of 50. Many world champion BJJ champions who haven't had the pleasure to be taught by Rickson on the mat... say the exact same thing. I don't know why these guys would say this as it lessens their own abilities and accomplishments???
In the end it, really comes down to the BJJ credentials of your GOAT BJJ player panel. I think it's pretty hard for anybody to outdo Rickson by this measure.

Some say that... but unfortunately the Mundials started only in 1996 and the ADCC's in 1998. Rickson never competed in them. His competitive BJJ career was over and was 38 in 1996, and 40 in 1998.
That being said, IMO you have to take the opinions of the guys I said because they've seen all the best in the Mundial & ADCC-age as well and still contend Rickson is GOAT.

I don't think the opinions of other grapplers outweigh the accomplishments of Marcelo because you can never know if they're lying for the sake of Rickson's legacy or the Gracie legacy. Marcelo is the greatest ADCC competitor ever, and he hangs with heavyweights. He is also competing at a time where there are more top level competitors than ever and he still wins. Rickson imo isn't a legend, he's a legendary character. he ducked saku and IMO lied about his 300 - 0 record.Dagwood wrote:Dapperdoo wrote:Marcelo Garcia > Rickson Gracie
