Cage Warriors 50 adds bantamweight bout between Wilson Reis and Owen Roddy
Mon Nov 19, 2012 3:45 pm
A bantamweight bout has been added to next month's Cage Warriors 50 event.
Promotion officials recently announced a fight between Bellator veteran Wilson Reis (15-4) and Ireland's Owen Roddy (11-3). Both fighters will be making their Cage Warriors debut.
Cage Warriors 50 takes place Dec. 8 at Kelvin Hall in Glasgow, Scotland. The main card streams on MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) following prelims on Facebook.
Reis fought nine times for Bellator, compiling a 5-4 record for the promotion. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt from Brazil lost to Joe Soto in the semifinals of the Season 1 featherweight tournament, to Patricio "Pitbull" Freire in the Season 2 tourney semis and again to eventual winner Freire in the semis of the Season 4 tournament.
He then dropped to bantamweight, but lost to eventual champ Eduardo Dantas in the opening round of Bellator's Season 5 135-pound tournament for his second straight setback. But since then, the Philadelphia-based fighter has gone 3-0 with a pair of first-round submission wins.
Reis' resume includes wins over UFC fighters Bryan Caraway and Henry Martinez, and he also won EliteXC's first bantamweight title just before that promotion folded.
Roddy signed an exclusive five-fight deal with Cage Warriors earlier this year and will drop to bantamweight for the fight against Reise. He comes into the fight on a seven-bout win streak, including a unanimous decision win over UFC vet Shannon Gugerty in July.
That win was the first of his career to go the distance and just the second time he had been out of the second round. Ten of his 11 career wins have come by stoppage with six submissions and four knockouts.
Although the Cage Warriors 50 main card streams live at MMAjunkie.com, the stream will not be available in the United Kingdom or Ireland due to the terms of the promotion's deal with Sky Sports. The event will air on Sky Sports 3 the following week.
The latest Cage Warriors 50 card includes:
