Attila Vegh out of Bellator 84 title fight with champ Christian M'Pumbu

Christian M'Pumbu's first light heavyweight title defense will have to wait yet again.

Bellator's 205-pound champion was set to defend his belt for the first time later this month at Bellator 84. But an injury to opponent Attila Vegh (25-7-2 MMA, 4-0 BFC) will force him out of the fight and off the card, and M'Pumbu (18-4-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC) will be off the card along with him.

Sources close to the promotion on Monday confirmed the news to MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) and also said the fight falling off will, for now, result in just three fights on the televised main card.

Bellator 84 takes place Dec. 14 at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind., about 20 miles from Chicago. Main-card fights air on MTV2 following prelims on Spike.com.

Bellator 84 is the promotion's Season 7 finale and will be its last event on MTV2 before moving to Spike TV in January for the start of its eighth season. The company's third trip to Hammond and second this season following Bellator 75 will feature the finals of the Season 7 lightweight and heavyweight tournaments.

Marcin Held and Dave Jansen meet for the lightweight crown, while Richard Hale takes on Alexander Volkov for the Season 7 heavyweight tournament title. Also on the card is a rematch between former training partners and current rivals Felice Herrig and Michelle Gutierrez.

Sources said the M'Pumbu-Vegh title fight now will move to sometime in Season 8, provided Vegh is healed and ready.

Vegh won Bellator's "Summer Series" light heavyweight tournament in August with a 25-second knockout win over Travis Wiuff. He submitted Zelg Galesic in the opening round of the tourney before a narrow split-decision win over Emanuel Newton in the semifinals. His decisive win over Wiuff booked title fight against M'Pumbu.

M'Pumbu won the Season 4 light heavyweight tournament by stopping Chris Davis, Tim Carpenter and current heavyweight tournament finalist Rich Hale with TKOs in the spring of 2011. But since his win over Hale in the finals at Bellator 45, M'Pumbu has fought just once.

In October 2011, he took a non-title fight against Travis Wiuff and went down to a unanimous decision at Bellator 55. That was M'Pumbu's most recent fight. His win in Season 4 was the promotion's first light heavyweight tournament, and Bellator didn't hold another tourney at 205 pounds until this past "Summer Series" in June, July and August, when Vegh won it all at Bellator 73.

^Sucks that Vegh/M'Pumbu is off this card. Was really looking forward to this fight. LHW needs a title fight more than any other div. since Wiuff beat M'Pumbu and now Vegh beat Wiuff to kind of be the uncrowned champ. This would have straightened things out. Only non-title fights Bellator should have are super fight cross-promotions.

I hope they just wait if Vegh is suppose to recover soon. If not, Wiuff rematch for the title, using a modified rematch rule.
