Frankie Edgar vs. BJ Penn III confirmed as TUF 19 Finale main event

B.J. Penn's first fight at featherweight was long confirmed to be against old foe Frankie Edgar, but now tonight we know when their 3rd fight will happen. UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani revealed that these two rivals, who are the coaches for the 19th season of The Ultimate Fighter, will be the main event of the Fox Sports 1-televised season finale on Sunday, July 6th.


Edgar (16-4-1) famously took the lightweight title away from Penn at UFC 112, and then won a comfortable and emphatic decision in the immediate rematch. "The Answer" moved to featherweight after a controversial split decision loss to Ben Henderson, who had previously usurped him as 155 champion in 2012. He gave Jose Aldo a highly competitive fight but ultimately lost on the scorecards, but did pick up a win over Charles Oliveira at UFC 162.

Penn (16-9-2) has not really recovered from that first Edgar fight. His record stands a paltry 1-4-1 over his last 6 fights, and he's not fought since Rory MacDonald dispatched him with consummate ease in December 2012. Penn's last win came against Matt Hughes in 2010, which, to give you an idea of how long it's been since his last victory: the WEC still existed, Jon Jones wasn't champion, Vitor Belfort hadn't had an official UFC fight at middleweight, and Chris Weidman wasn't even in the UFC. This upcoming 3rd bout with Edgar marks his 145 debut, and is essentially his absolute last gasp at remaining relevant in any division as a potential contender.

The 4th of July weekend will be a huge one for the UFC. Not only will the TUF Finale take place on the 6th, but preceding it is UFC 175 on the 5th, all under the umbrella of the week-long UFC International Fight Week. Both events will take place at the Mandalay Bay Events Center.
