ACB announce new weigh in policy, and new weight classes Empty ACB announce new weigh in policy, and new weight classes

Thu Feb 04, 2016 8:31 pm

Russian MMA promotion by the name of Absolute Championship Berkut recently announced that they would begin to implement a new weigh-in system as well as introduce new weight classes in the latter half of 2016.

According to an interview with the promotion's founder Mairbek Khasiev, weigh-ins will take place six hours before the fights actually take place, instead of the day before. The plans also include a new superheavyweight division...

The new weight classes layout is as follows:

Flyweight - 58kg (127.8 lbs.)
Bantamweight - 63kg (138.9 lbs.)
Featherweight - 68kg (149.9 lbs.)
Lightweight - 74kg (163.1 lbs.)
Welterweight - 80kg (176.3 lbs.)
Middleweight - 87kg (191.8 lbs.)
Light-heavyweight - 96kg (211.6 lbs.)
Heavyweight - 107kg (235.9 lbs.)
Superheavyweight - 107kg+ (over 235.9 lbs.)

MMA needs less weight classes in my opinion.  I would prefer 20 lbs increments, like there is between 185 and 205 now, but for each weight class (aside from HW which I would leave as is):

FLW: 125 lbs and under
FW: 145 lbs
LW: 165 lbs
MW: 185 lbs
LHW: 205 lbs
HW: 265 lbs
SHW: 265 lbs and over

This would eliminate the BW and WW divisions but would consolidate more talent into the other divisions.  Sometimes talent gets spread too thin across weight classes.

Then promotions should focus on the LW, MW, LHW, and HW divisions since there are way more finishes in the heavier classes. The lighter weight classes have way too many decisions.
