It's official: Frank Mir Steps in to Fight Junior dos Santos at UFC 146
Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:31 am
When it was revealed that Alistair Overeem tested for an elevated ratio of testosterone-to-epitestosterone, almost everyone immediately jumped on the thought that Junior dos Santos would get an opponent change for his May 26 title defense. Almost everyone targeted Frank Mir as the most likely, and most deserving, option.
UFC officials did not make and immediate change, and UFC president Dana White fanned the flames of speculation when he tweeted in response to a fan question on Twitter that Frank Mir would still be fighting Cain Velasquez.
How quickly things change.
Following Friday night’s live fight on The Ultimate Fighter, just before taking off to Atlanta for Saturday night’s UFC 145: Jones vs. Evans, again turned to his favorite social media platform to inform everyone that Overeem has been removed from the UFC 146 title fight with dos Santos.
“Taking off to Atlanta!!!! May 26 th is now Mir vs JDS for the HW title in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand,” tweeted White.
It’s unclear why the change came just days before Overeem was slated to go before the Nevada State Athletic Commission to offer up his reasoning for a T/E ratio of 14-to-1 at a surprise drug screen in March. A normal ratio for most men is 1-to-1, although the NSAC set a ratio of 6-to-1 before an athlete is considered beyond the allowable limit.
The announcement, however, isn’t a good indicator that Overeem is likely to be successful in arguing his case to the NSAC.
With little more than a month to go until UFC 146, company officials have little time left to promote the new title fight, but don’t be surprised if they start at UFC 145 on Saturday night.

1. Dana lied again.
2. This card sucks now.
3. Everyone now gets screwed and all of their opponents are changing on them just a few weeks before the event. Who is fighting Velasquez now? I was super interested in this card, not anymore.

Cain will probably get Bigfoot, while Nelson's replacement will probably be Miocic.

Mir-Velasquez was definitely a more intriguing fight. What happens with Cain indeed. Do they bring up some can? Is he off the card? Do they reshuffle?
I think the best explanation is that they are trying to reflect an air of credibility with respect to their matchmaking, since Mir is hypothetically considered the guy next in line. I guess people forget a 1-1 Brock Lesnar getting a title fight against a Randy Couture who had publicly relinquished his belt and was sued into the fight off of a 16 month layoff (Couture having got the belt from Sylvia, again off a long layoff/retirement, in a situation where Couture was back training specifically for the fight while Sylvia didn't even know the fight was on the docket). Then we had Carwin-Lesnar. The Lesnar goes away for a long time, and comes back to be KO'd in a mismatch with Velasquez, who is sparked out in a minute and a half in a one sided fight in the most hyped up fight in UFC history. Interesting time to start projecting legitimacy with regards to the HW belt.

I was thrilled when they announced this fight. I've always been a bit of an Eddie fan, and I'm a big Adamek fan. I look for Adamek to win this one, bit this is a great clash of two smaller HWs. This could be the best HW fight of the year potentially, possibly even a fight of the year type of fight if Eddie Chambers shows up in good form. I know it's difficult for HWs to compete with the lower weights when it comes to FOTY type fights, but these are guys that fight like small HWs in there, always against bigger guys. Them colliding against each other, who knows what to expect. I think the last FOTY in the upper weights was Toney-Jirov. This matchup is somehow reminiscent a little bit, and they are similarly sized.

What happened to all these people who though UFC had all the top fighters? and this is the best they could bring us? Its pathetic.
I am now officially looking forward more to the Pedro Rizzo fight. I think the Fedor v Rizzo is a better matchup and will prove more exciting. Cain is again les on the sidelines as usual.

I agree with you on that actually. I still look forward to this card, I like heavyweight fights and like that they would dedicate an entire main card to one. But the main event is a let down now, and Mir-Velasquez was actually an interesting fight and much more interesting than this one. The Fedor-Rizzo matchup is a more interesting matchup than JDS-Mir to me as well.
I don't really consider this too important or anything, but you guys realize that if Fedor wins this match he scalps yet another former UFC champion?

I thought he was, now that I look back I guess he just fought for it 3 times (against Randleman and 2x against Couture). Doesn't matter, the other wins against champs did each mean a lot though at the time.

Fedor is the GOAT. Bring him on over to fight cain so he can get a new ufc champ feather in his hat.
