No Holds Barred: Stephen Kamphuis on ADCC Asia-Pacfic World Qualifying Championships
Tue Jul 24, 2012 12:49 pm
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with Stephen Kamphuis of ADCC Philippines (http://www.adccphilippines.com).
The ADCC Philippines is organizing the ADCC Asia-Pacfic World Qualifying Championships, which will be held November 3-4 at the SM Mall of Asia, Music Atrium, Manila Bay side, in Manila, the Philippines.
This event is the selection trials for the Asia-Pacific region for the 2013 ADCC World Submission Fighting Championships, the most prestigious grappling event in the world. The winners of the advanced divisions will receive free accommodation and airfare to compete at the 2013 ADCC Worlds.
We spoke with Stephen Kamphuis by Skype Sunday (Saturday night New York time) about the significance of this event.
"The impact of an event like this for this region is huge," said Stephen Kamphuis in this interview. With the Asian grappling scene already rapidly growing, he added that this "accelerates the work that people have been doing before this" and "will lift the sport in this region, the competitiveness of the players and the exposure we get for the sport. It's a fantastic thing for the region."
We also discussed his background in judo and boxing and how he started training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, why this outdoor event may be seen by one of the largest audiences ever to watch grappling in the world, why mixed martial arts needs sports like grappling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and much more.
