Surging Georgi Karakhanyan just wants to kick someone in the face after Tachi win
Tue Sep 11, 2012 4:29 pm
Bellator vet Georgi Karakhanyan (19-3-1) just put another win in the bank this past weekend at Tachi Palace Fights 14, retaining his featherweight title in the regional promotion.
Of course, he's pining for a shot in the big leagues, like everyone else.
But what he'd really like to do is fight "international rules," where he can fulfill a long-held dream to soccer kick someone in the face. Preferably Joe Warren.
"Maybe I could take to ONE FC and soccer-kick him," Karakhanyan on Monday told MMAjunkie.com Radio (www.mmajunkie.com/radio).
A little harsh? Perhaps. Of all the rules made popular by the now-defunct PRIDE, soccer kicks were the most visibly brutal.
They also instill a strange sense of loyalty among series fans of the sport and striking specialists who long for a day when they can defend against wrestlers with a kick to the jaw.
Warren is just such a wrestler, and Karakhanyan is nicknamed "The Insane One." A more perfect fit is hard to find.
"Someone shoots in and you sprawl and kick their head off," Karakhanyan said. "That's probably the best feeling – soccer kicking someone in the face."
Karakhanyan spent a lot of unwanted time on his back when he fought Warren in 2010 under the Bellator banner. Despite his relative lack of MMA experience, Warren, a decorated Greco Roman stylist, cruised to a unanimous decision victory and knocked Karakhanyan out of the promotion's season 2 featherweight tournament.
With the upstart ONE FC now sanctioning the rule set utilized by PRIDE, Karakhanyan, who boasts 11 submission wins among his 19 wins, sees a great opportunity to do what he's always wanted to do.
"It would just be natural to me," he said. "I hate wrestling and laying and praying."
That Warren is famously cocky probably doesn't deter Karakhanyan.
With five consecutive wins under his belt, including this past Friday's win over WEC vet Micah Miller, Karakhanyan wants to get in two more fights by the end of the year. Yet he's firm in his desire to stay out of long-term contracts. When the big show comes calling, he doesn't want to be booked.
"I hope I can get with any organization," he said. "I just hope UFC gives me that chance. Maybe it will be on one or two weeks notice, but I'll be ready."
In the meantime, he'd like to have some fun, Wanderlei Silva-style.
