[Bellator FW Tournament Discussion] Sandro, Fabiano Added to Bellator Featherweight Tournament Field
Tue Dec 20, 2011 4:40 pm
A pair of Brazilian talents has been added to Bellator Fighting Championships’ sixth-season featherweight tournament, as Wagnney Fabiano and Marlon Sandro will both compete for a shot at the gold in the coming year.
Sherdog.com confirmed the tournament participation of both men on Tuesday with sources close to the fighters. Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney initially tweeted news of Fabiano’s signing last week but did not specify the fighter’s tournament plans.
Bellator’s sixth season is expected to kick off in March and will also feature tournaments in the bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions. Season 6 events will air live on Friday nights on MTV2 and Epix.
Sandro (Pictured) is no stranger to the Chicago-based promotion’s circular cage, having fought his way to the finals of the Summer Series tournament before being knocked out by current top contender Pat Curran. Prior to his showdown with Curran, the former Sengoku featherweight titleholder outpointed Genair da Silva and Nazareno Malegarie en route his finals berth. The 34-year-old Nova Uniao export rebounded from his loss on Nov. 19, locking up an arm-triangle choke to submit Rafael Dias at Bellator 58.
While Sandro owns a 3-1 Bellator record, Fabiano has never before competed for the Chicago-based promotion. Also representing Nova Uniao, the 36-year-old has not fought since ending his World Extreme Cagefighting career 13 months ago with a submission defeat to Joseph Benavidez. Known for his potent submission skills, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioner holds notable victories over Ian Loveland, L.C. Davis and Fredson Paixao.

Straus is also a former tourney finalist, earning his way to the finals of the promotion's season-four tournament with wins over Kenny Foster and Nazareno Malegarie. Straus suffered a decision loss in the finals to Patricio "Pitbull" Freire.
Bellator executives have officially announced Marlon Sandro (20-3 MMA, 3-1 BFC)and Ronnie Mann (21-4-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC) will also take part in the tournament, and MMAjunkie.com previously reported the participation of Wagnney Fabiano (14-3 MMA, 0-0 BFC).

Genair da Silva (11-4 MMA, 1-1 BFC) is the sixth and latest addition to Bellator's sixth-season featherweight tournament.
The fighter, who was bumped from the opening round of the organization's "Summer Series" tournament with a close split-decision defeat to Marlon Sandro, has joined the eight-man field for the latest 145-pound tournament.
Sources close to the fighter today confirmed da Silva's participation with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
He now joins Marlon Sandro (20-3 MMA, 3-1 BFC), Alexandre "Popo" Bezerra (11-1 MMA, 4-0 BFC), Ronnie Mann (21-4-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC), Wagnney Fabiano (14-3 MMA, 0-0 BFC) and Daniel Straus (17-4 MMA, 3-1 BFC) in the tourney, which kicks off on MTV2 in March.
Da Silva, a Brazilian who had a successful three-year run on the country's regional circuit, signed with Bellator earlier this year before suffering the defeat to Sandro. However, he made a victorious return to the organization and secured his spot in the upcoming tournament with a recent first-round submission victory over Bellator regular Bryan Goldsby in October at Bellator 52.
Da Silva now owns eight stoppages (six knockouts) in 11 career wins. He's also won five of his past six fights.

Jeremy Spoon added to Bellator's season-six featherweight tourney field
Undefeated Jeremy Spoon is tournament bound.
The former lightweight, who's picked up a pair of non-tournament victories in recent Bellator fights, has joined the eight-man field for a featherweight tourney in season six.
Bellator officials today confirmed his participation with MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com).
Spoon (12-2 MMA, 2-0 BFC) now joins Genair da Silva (11-4 MMA, 1-1 BFC), Marlon Sandro (20-3 MMA, 3-1 BFC), Alexandre "Popo" Bezerra (11-1 MMA, 4-0 BFC), Ronnie Mann (21-4-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC), Wagnney Fabiano (14-3 MMA, 0-0 BFC) and Daniel Straus (17-4 MMA, 3-1 BFC) in the tourney, which kicks off on MTV2 in March.
Spoon, who won a high-school state-wrestling championship, turned pro in 2008 and won his first five fights in two minutes or less. The former Bricktown Brawl and KOTC champion owns eight submission victories and a knockout in his 12 career wins.
Spoon secured his tourney berth with a recent Bellator 56 win over Adam Schindler. He also owns a Bellator victory over Jerrod Sanders and an early-career win over Jose Vega, who eventually joined Bellator.
In addition to the featherweight tournament, Bellator is hosting season-six tourneys in the bantamweight, lightweight, welterweight and middleweight divisions. Each tourney winner gets $100,000 in total pay and a guaranteed title shot.

Vargas Completes Bellator FW Field
A two-time Bellator veteran, Vargas debuted for the promotion in 2009, outpointing Daniel Pineda at Bellator 6. Though “Beto” would fall to Wilson Reis in his next outing and therefore fail to earn a spot in the organization’s second-season tournament, the Californian has won his last six fights since departing Bellator. Vargas was last seen earning a split decision over Jared Downing at Shark Fights 20.
