World Series of Fighting to Re-Air on NBC Sports Network Sunday... Empty World Series of Fighting to Re-Air on NBC Sports Network Sunday...

Sun Nov 04, 2012 7:15 pm
Re-born former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei “The Pitbull” Arlovski (18-9) of Minsk, Belarus scored a crushing first round (2:37) TKO on Devin Cole (20-10) of Medford, Ore. in the main event of the 10-bout inaugural World Series of Fighting card at PH Live at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on Saturday, Nov. 3, live on NBC Sports Network.

The four-bout telecast will re-air on NBC Sports Network Sunday, Nov. 4 at 11 p.m. EST/8 p.m. PST.

In the light heavyweight (205 pounds) co-main event, superstar Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (15-3) of Boca Raton, Fla. put D.J. Linderman (14-4) of Yreka, Calif. flat on the canvas with a hard right hand, earning his fourth consecutive victory by way of first round KO (3:58).

Arlovski found his opportunity early in the first round when Cole moved forward, Arlovski cracked him with an overhand right that connected on top of Cole’s head and sent him to the canvas. Arlovski pounced on his downed opponent and landed hammer fists before Cole rolled onto his side and the referee stopped the bout.

As for his TKO, Arlovski was pumped with the result of the fight. “Everybody likes knock outs, I also like to knock people out. I was the better man in there and that’s it. But of course I’m very excited, I feel very good right now.”

Shortly after the opening bell rang for the co-main event, Johnson landed an accidental groin kick that put Linderman on the mat in pain. After Linderman stood up and the bout resumed, Johnson went on the attack, but suddenly turned to referee Herb Dean, claiming that he had been poked in the eye.

Unaware of an eye poke, Dean instructed the fighters to resume their efforts and, shortly after they did, Linderman came forward, only to feel the impact of a straight right hand from Johnson that put Linderman on the canvas face-first and prompted Dean to call an end to the fight.

In his post fight interview, Johnson said he’s not upset that referee Herb Dean didn’t call the eye poke. “Herb’s an awesome ref, I’ve got so much respect for him, he’s doesn’t see everything. Sometimes fighters will fake stuff and act like they’re hurt when they’re really not. So, I respect Herb’s decision not to stop the fight. If he would have stopped the fight I wouldn’t have had a knockout like I did.”

Two-time national Muay Thai champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu brown belt Marlon Moraes (9-4) of Jupiter, Fla. via Nova Friburgo, Brazil pulled off an upset over former world champion and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Miguel Torres (40-6) of East Chicago, Ind.

Moraes consistently beat Torres to the punch while Torres appeared to be gun shy throughout three rounds of action. Moraes scored power shots to the head and landed enough leg kicks to convince two of three judges to give him the nod.

Moraes said in his post-fight interview with MMA Fight Corner, “I have no feelings for how I am feeling right now, I’m just really, really happy.”

He also discussed how Hurricane Sandy has affected the area of New York where he trains at Renzo Gracie BJJ with Frankie Edgar. “The hurricane was really, really scary. I was there and I couldn’t train for five days. And then in camp, I had to cut weight, but I had no gym, or anywhere to train. I did train inside the house by myself, but I came here ready and I got it.”

The highly-anticipated MMA debut of kickboxing superstar Tyrone Spong (1-0) of Boca Raton, Fla. via Amsterdam, Netherlands lived up to its hype as the 27-year-old came out of the gates launching an all-out assault against Travis Bartlett (7-3) of Bangor, Maine in a light heavyweight matchup. Spong scored a finishing straight right hand that put Bartlett down and out on the floor.

Spong told MMA Fight Corner’s Heidi Fang that he will try to remember next time that his opponent does not get a standing eight count in MMA. “It’s just you know, natural. I’ve had over 100 fights, so when you knock somebody down, you just walk to the neutral corner. So, I have to work on that because you give somebody a chance to recover, so I’ll work on it.”

World Series of Fighting President Ray Sefo was pleased with the overall event. “You couldn’t ask for a better start, you know, a packed house everybody came and delivered. Everybody throughout these last few days said thank you for looking after us and we feel we’ve been looked after well. That makes me feel warm inside, because we did what we said we’d do and that’s looking after our guys. Obviously this is the beginning for us. We’re just going to take things slow and build on what we just did and get better and better every time. “

Though no date is set for the next event, Sefo confirmed it will be in January at the Planet Hollywood. Already announced to be on the fight card, Marlon Moraes vs Tyson Nam.

This is arguably how the UFC became popular with Spike. Very good for WSOF.
