A look back at Jmma on NYE 総合格闘技 PART 2 IMG_2251

Ok so Im going to start off by going back to 2001 real quick as I did start in 2003 but I came to the conclusion that someone may be curious of the 2001 and 2002 inoki bom ba ye.

Heres a quick rewind

Inoki Bom Ba Ye
2001 December 31 , Saitama

To my knoweldge this is one of the earliest nye events that held mma fights, it was marketed at the time as a k-1 vs Inoki army event. And imo helped start what became the tradition of Jmma on nye.
Interesting note about this event is after the event ended rice cakes where being thrown in celebration and some how led to the crowd getting into a brawl lol causing a giant riot and the police were forced to get involved.

Here are the matchups and results

First game army Inoki K-1vs (3R 3 minutes)
△ Mike Bernardo vs. Nobuhiko Takada △
End draw 3R
Army second match Inoki K-1vs (5R 3 minutes)
△ Sam Greco vs. Masaaki Satake △
End draw 5R
Third bout Inoki Army K-1vs (5R 3 minutes)
△ Ebenzeru-Fontesu Braga vs. Gary Goodridge △
End draw 5R
Fourth bout Inoki Army K-1vs (5R 3 minutes)
△ Shingo Koyasu vs. light Ishizawa △
End draw 5R
Special wrestling match
○ Antonio Inoki & The Great Sasuke vs. Giant Silva & Masked red and white ×
Octopus hold 4:02 (Inoki - red and white mask)
Fifth bout Inoki Army K-1vs (5R 3 minutes)
○ Don Frye vs. Cyril avidity ×
2R 0:34 Choke Sleeper
Sixth bout Inoki Army K-1vs (5R 3 minutes)
○ Mirko Cro Cop vs. Yuji Nagata ×
1R 0:21 TKO (referee stoppage: → pound left high kick)
Seventh army fight Inoki K-1vs (5R 3 minutes)
○ Tadao Yasuda vs. Jerome Le Banner ×
2R 2:10 guillotine choke

○ Bob Sapp vs good Hiroshi Takayama ×
1R 2:16 arm lock cross hold
This was when people started to really take a look at cro cop and wonder if he would be the first k-1 guy to transition well into mma, he had a good fight with Fujita a japanese legend in his own right, but Cropcop proved he could win in mma and came out on top.
Yoshida made short work of Satake who never really grasped the grappling aspect of the sport.
Bob Sapp vs the original Sexayama- 2 ugly mofos who would be considered a traditional match up in Japanese culture for a nye event.

Yea you just saw that....

First off this imo was probably the best shockwave card PRIDE has ever put out, you had all the greats Fedor,Nog,WAnd,Hunt this was also the final for the HW gp.
Heres how the bracket played out with eventual winner FEDOR

A look back at Jmma on NYE 総合格闘技 PART 2 Hwgp04

Mu Bae Choi vs Paulo Cesar Silva

Yoji Anjo vs Ryan Gracie
Gracie defeated Anjo via submission (armbar) at 8:33 of round 1.
Ryo Chonan vs Anderson Silva

Gomi defeated Pulver via KO (punch) at 6:21 of round 1.
Mark Hunt vs Wanderlei Silva
Hunt defeated Silva via split decision.
Pride Heavyweight Championship bout: Fedor Emelianenko vs Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira
Fedor wins via decision
Imo This is what a number 1 promotions best card of the year should look like. And on free tv no less. Very Happy

A few thoughts....
Minowaman legend is in full steam ahead mode, Giant silva all though a huge man continues to bring the lols for the crowd.
Anderson Silva finds out the hard way the competition isnt easier in Japan.
Gardner vs yoshida two gold meadlist going at it? Damn right. Crocop gets his revenge on randleman is record fashion. Henderson and jmma legend Yuki kondo go toe to toe and have a great fight, imo this fight could have gone either way, sadly for Yuki it didnt. Hendo's legend starts to sprout. Gomi vs Pulver was damn near a boxing match with Gomi winning by ko. Next up imo one of the best fights of all time, Wand vs Hunt, Wand was 70 lbs lighter then Hunt who was a shw at the time and former k-1 champion, wand the smaller man showed his warrior spirit and went head to head with Hunt, also Hunt gets props for taking this fight on a few days notice. This fight gave birth to the Atomic Butt drop coined by Randy Couture who was ringside. A great superfight that really showed the spirit of the fighters in PRIDE. Hunt wins a close one.
Fedor vs NOG, once again the top 2 hw's in the world go at it, Nog fought with great heart, but it was clear in this fight Fedor was beyond anything big NOg had.

Predator defeated Midoux by Submission (Neck Crank) at 1:11 of the 1st round.

Fujita defeated Ibrahim by KO (Punch) at 1:07 of the 1st round.
Fight #8, Special Mixed Rules:
Jerome Le Banner vs. Bob Sapp
The fight was declared a draw. The rules for the fight stipulated that rounds 1 and 3 would be fought with K-1 rules, and rounds 2 and 4 would be fought under MMA rules. There were no judges for this fight.
Fight #9, K-1 MMA Rules:
Akebono vs. Royce Gracie
Gracie defeated Akebono by Submission (Wrist Lock) at 2:13 of the 1st round.

Not a bad night by any means but overshadowed match wise by PRIDE yet K-1 still delevered the goods to the Japanese crowd.
Fujita wins via ko in a match he was in no anger in.
Gracie looked comical imo against the monster sized AKEBONO non the less he finished him quite easily. A look back at Jmma on NYE 総合格闘技 PART 2 4194385176

Same thing for me bro. I became an mma fan via K-1 and then PRIDE when Cro Cop signed with them. I didn´t like the UFC version of mma at all and I was devastated when Zuffa killed PRIDE. I´m still waiting for a new golden age of mma.

Thanks guys and of course I agree with you that it was better, and as for ufc I actually liked the way ufc was in the early zuffa days(02-03)but now it just seems odd to me, it almost doesnt even seem like mma sometimes anymore to me, sometimes I feel it has more of a wrestling mixed with strikes vibe then what mma was..if that makes sense at at lol.

I do miss the golden days but also with them being gone has made them legendary, and really makes you wonder just what the hell happened. I think M-1 has a good thing going with really turning it into a sport in Russia. KSW has the production down, and Bellator has the format some what right(earn your shots) and one fc has the rules that should be the real unified rules... of course I always love a good super fight now and again or a freak show.

The problem is now adays when "superfights" arnt really that super at all and thier few and far between. For example GSP-Anderson is a superfight but its not really what the fans want which would be Anderson-Jones...so I dont know I could go on for days about it but its bst saved for another thread.

Luckily we have Glory now. They seem to have financial powers and it would be interesting to see them working together with KSW as well. Glory/KSW co-promotion, can it be much better?

I loved that event. Silva was very disappointed about his loss to Hunt and it was close. The final of the HW GP was awesome. Sergei was doing great in the GP and it would have been cool to see him vs Fed in the final.

That was an amazing PRIDE event. My all time favorite was PRIDE 10 but the Shockwave events are all up there as well.
