KOTC Champ David Gomez Looks to Cap Solid Year with Title Defense Empty KOTC Champ David Gomez Looks to Cap Solid Year with Title Defense

Thu Dec 20, 2012 12:53 am
For current King of the Cage welterweight champion David Gomez, just winning wasn’t enough. He wanted to win impressively. He accomplished that goal in 2012.

“I’ve gone undefeated this year and got some knockouts this year, so I’ll say I did pretty well this year,” Gomez told MMAWeekly.com.

“My fights are getting more exciting being that there’s more stand-up and I’m finishing opponents. I am giving people what they want to see, exciting fights, and every time I fight I get better, so I’m pretty happy with myself.”

Upping the excitement of his fights wasn’t the only notable thing Gomez did this year, as he managed to get a win over the fighter to last defeat him, Bill Albrecht.

“When I fought him in his hometown (last year), I wasn’t 100-percent, but he beat me fair and square, I got caught,” said Gomez. “But the way I look at it, I really lost it because it was me who lost it and not because he beat me because he was the better fighter.

“I wanted prove to people and show them that he wasn’t the better fighter before.”

Having won five fights in a row, the 14-4 Gomez will look to keep his winning streak going and title in hand as he puts both on the line on Thursday, Dec. 20, at KOTC: Vigilante at the San Manuel Casino in Highland, Calif., against a fighter who is also undefeated this year in Sam Liera.

“From what I know, (Liera) likes to go to the ground and go for the choke and grapple more, which is okay with me because I have no fear of going to the ground. I train a lot on that every day and have paid my dues on the ground,” said Gomez.

“I want to test him in a stand-up war, so that’s probably what I’ll try to do, keep it standing.”

Should Gomez cap off his year with a win over Liera on Dec. 20, he aspires to not only continue to have an impact inside the cage, but outside it as well.

“KOTC has done a lot of great things for me and provide me with opportunity to show people that we’re not just fighters, but able to help the community out too,” said Gomez. “That to me is more important than anything else; to showcase myself as not only a fighter, but as someone who helps people out.

“I want to keep defending my belt and grow more as a fighter and I want to compete with the best in the world, wherever they’re at. Every day I train hard to evolve and it brings me one step closer to those guys and where I want to be.”
