Floyd Mayweather vs Robert Guerrero 'close to done' for May 4... 006_robert_guerrero.0_standard_709.0

Floyd Mayweather's next fight looks like it might be set, as BoxingScene.com is reporting that a deal for a fight with Robert Guerrero is "close to done" for May 4.

Mayweather (43-0, 26 KO) hasn't fought since May 5, when he beat Miguel Cotto, which was followed by a stint in prison. The Grand Rapids, Mich., native will turn 36 in February, and would be returning to the welterweight division to face Guerrero. Mayweather fought Cotto at 154 pounds, only the second time he'd ever fought over 147 pounds.

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KO) angled for the Mayweather fight last May, but was shrugged off as a pretender who didn't deserve the bout. At the time, "The Ghost" had never fought over a 138-pound catchweight, and was coming off of a lengthy stint on the shelf due to injury.

Guerrero, who will turn 30 in March, returned to the ring in July and debuted at welterweight with a win over rugged Selcuk Aydin, which he followed with an even more impressive victory over Andre Berto on November 24. After both bouts, he called out Mayweather, with that fight sounding more viable than it had the first time around.

If the fight is made, Showtime does supposedly have a shot at the pay-per-view bout, but Mayweather has been an HBO loyalist over his career, and Showtime landing the fight would not only be massive news that would put HBO on high alert, but it would have to be considered an upset, too. Mayweather is the man largely credited with making "24/7" the success it has been, and is the biggest pay-per-view draw in boxing.

As for Canelo Alvarez, who also hoped to land the fight with Mayweather, he could be waiting in the wings to face Floyd later in the year.
