Full Contact Championship (FCC) owner Prashant Kumar wanted to bring in some new blood ahead of his promotion’s first show outside Mumbai and the matchmaking made for a night of upsets.

Two of FCC’s most experienced fighters were beaten by opponents who had never competed in MMA before which goes to show how rapidly the standard in India is improving.

Wrestling has traditionally been the most successful base for mixed martial artists and Harshad Sadgir kept that tradition alive by outclassing Guaran Pandev forcing the more experienced fighter to tap out midway through the opening round.

Sadgir is a national level wrestling gold medalist and used this skillset to good effect to finish the fight with a ground and pound onslaught. It was the welterweight’s MMA debut and he handed Pandey (3-1) the first loss of his career.

Another debutant to record a surprise victory was Mukesh Degda who comes from a Wushu and kickboxing background and also finished his fight by ground and pound in round two to snap Nitin Gaikwad’s two fight winning streak.

Gaikwad’s record fell to 3-2 after this defeat with his only previous loss coming in a title fight against current champion Javed Mulla at FCC 4. On the basis of this performance Degda looks to be a candidate to challenge for the FCC middleweight belt.

In the main event former Abu Dhabi BJJ gold medalist Vishal Balkawade scored his second successive submission win with a rear naked choke victory over Tasir Sayed in a light heavyweight match up. Balkawade’s record improves to 2-1 with his only loss coming at the hands of top Chinese fighter Bao Li Gao in 2007.

The most dramatic moment of the night came in the co-main event when tall American Eddie Teel, the only non Indian fighter on the card, was knocked out by light heavyweight Sher Khan who improves to 2-0 with this win. FCC 8 was part of India Bike Week and an estimated 2,000 fans were on hand to watch the action which will appear in a highlights program on Fox.
