GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Update Summary (April 2013)

Soa Palelei: Soa “The Hulk” Palelei signed an exclusive contract with the UFC and was removed from the GLOBAL-MMA heavyweight rankings as reported on 04 March 2013. Rolles Gracie returned to the heavyweight rankings following the removal of Palelei.

Brett Cooper: Brett Cooper finished Dan Cramer at Bellator 92 on 07 March 2013. The victory earned Cooper a place in the middleweight contenders list and a spot in the Bellator middleweight tournament finals. Cramer fell just one spot in the contenders list and Brian Rogers was dropped from the rankings.

Doug Marshall: Doug Marshall moved up one spot into the middleweight top 10 after defeating Sultan Aliev at Bellator 92 to earn a spot in the Bellator middleweight finals against Brett Cooper.

Magomedrasul Khasbulaev: Magomedrasul Khasbulaev defeated Marlon Sandro with a flurry of punches on the ground forcing referee John McCarthy to call a halt to the action at 2 minutes 38 seconds of the third round at Bellator 92. The victory earned Khasbulaev a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA featherweight top 10. Sandro dropped to the featherweight contenders list due to the defeat. Khasbulaev will enter the Bellator featherweight tournament finals where he will meet Mike Richman for a shot at the Bellator title.

Jan Blachowicz: Jan Blachowicz successfully defended his light heavyweight title against Goran Reljic earning a unanimous decision victory at KSW 22 on 16 March 2013. The third straight title defense earned Blachowicz the second spot in the GLOBAL-MMA light heavyweight rankings.

Takenori Sato: Pancrase welterweight champion Takenori Sato fought Akihiro Murayama to a draw at Pancrase 246 on 17 March 2013. Sato now sits in the number 9 spot in the welterweight division as Murayama is placed at number 10.

Aleksander Emelianenko: Aleksander Emelianenko came out of retirement and signed a contract with ProFC as reported on 21 March 2013. Aleksander Emelianenko returned to the heavyweight top 10 upon his return to MMA. Rolles Gracie was removed from the rankings due to the return of Emelianenko.

Travis Wiuff: Travis Wiuff made a permanent move to the heavyweight division so he was removed from the light heavyweight rankings. In his second straight heavyweight fight, Wiuff suffered his third straight defeat as he was finished by Ryan Martinez in just 18 seconds of the first round at Bellator 93 on 21 March 2013. Travis Wiuff is now 0-2 in the heavyweight division since his recent weight change so he will not be ranked. Ryan Martinez’s victory against Wiuff will also not earn him a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA heavyweight rankings. M-1 Global light heavyweight champion, Sergey Kornev, entered the light heavyweight rankings after the removal of Wiuff.

Dave Jansen: Dave Jansen defeated Marcin Held at Bellator 93 by unanimous decision to win the Bellator lightweight tournament and earn the next crack at the top ranked Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler. The victory earned Jansen a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA lightweight rankings contender’s list. Paul Sass was removed from the rankings due to the entrance of Jansen.

Justin Gaethje: Newly signed WSOF lightweight contender, Justin Gaethje, finished Gesias “JZ” Cavalcante in the first round due to doctor stoppage at WSOF 2 on 23 March 2013. The impressive victory earned Gaethje a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA lightweight contenders list. Lloyd Woodard was removed from the rankings due to the entrance of Gaethje.

Josh Burkman: Josh Burkman made easy work of Aaron Simpson at WSOF 2 finishing the UFC vet with knees and punches in the first round. The victory earned Burkman a spot in the welterweight contenders list. His next fight is scheduled against top 5 welterweight Jon Fitch at WSOF 3. Fabricio Monteiro was removed from the rankings due to the entrance of Burkman.

Marlon Moraes: Marlon Moraes knocked out number 2 ranked bantamweight, Tyson Nam, with a well placed head kick followed by precision punches on the ground at WSOF 2. The knockout victory earned Moraes a spot at number 2 in the bantamweight division, just one spot behind bantamweight king Bibiano Fernandes. Tyson Nam fell to number 7 following the defeat. A WSOF title fight could be the next step for the top WSOF bantamweight, Moraes.

Anthony Johnson: Anthony “Rumble” Johnson moved up to the heavyweight division for a single fight against top ten ranked Andrei Arlovski at WSOF 2. Johnson proved he can hang with the big boys as he earned a unanimous decision victory over Arlovski. Arlovski suffered from a broken jaw and had several teeth knocked out in the battle as he was nearly finished in the first round. Arlovski battled on through two rounds like the warrior that he is to finish the fight. Since the fight was contested in the heavyweight division, Johnson remains ranked at number 7 in the light heavyweight division. Arlovski also stayed put, holding his rank at number 9 after the valiant performance.

David Rickels: David Rickels finished Saad Awad at Bellator 94 on 28 March 2013 with a flurry of punches at the end of the second round. The victory earned Rickels a spot in the GLOBAL-MMA lightweight top 10 and a Bellator tournament championship. Rickels will next face top ranked lightweight Michael Chandler for the Bellator crown. Awad dropped to the contenders list following the loss.

Emanuel Newton: Top ranked light heavyweight, Emanuel Newton, maintained his position after defeating Mikhail Zayats by unanimous decision at Bellator 94. Newton won the Bellator light heavyweight tournament and will next take on Bellator champion Attila Vegh. Mikhail Zayats dropped to number 7 due to the defeat.

Antonio Neto: Antonio Neto was removed from the middleweight rankings after signing an exclusive contract with the UFC as reported on 01 April 2013. Road FC middleweight champion, Eun Soo Lee, entered the rankings following the removal of Neto.

Rick Hawn: Rick Hawn moved up for a single fight in the welterweight division where he finished fellow judo veteran Karo Parisyan by knockout due to punches in the second round at Bellator 95 on 04 April 2013. The victory did not affect Hawn’s standing in the lightweight rankings.

Magomedrasul “Frodo” Khasbulaev: ”Frodo” Khasbulaev won the Bellator featherweight tournament by earning a unanimous decision victory over Mike Richman at Bellator 95. “Frodo” moved up one spot, to number 9, in the featherweight rankings due to the victory. The next fight for “Frodo” will be for the Bellator featherweight title.

Pat Curran: Pat Curran maintained his spot atop the featherweight division by submitting Shahbulat Shamhalaev with a guillotine choke in the first round to defend his featherweight title. Curran has Daniel Straus and “Frodo” Khasbulaev waiting in the wings for their cracks at his Bellator crown. Shamhalaev dropped one spot in the contenders list following the first round submission defeat.

Leandro Issa: Leandro Issa returned to the bantamweight contenders list after earning a unanimous decision victory over Yusup Saadulaev at ONE FC 8 on 05 April 2013. Travis Marx was removed from the rankings following the defeat.

Kevin Belingon: Kevin Belingon earned a spot in the ONE FC bantamweight tournament finals by defeating Thanh Vu by TKO in the second round at ONE FC 8. Belingon moved up two spots in the bantamweight contenders list following the victory.

Masakatsu Ueda: Masakatsu Ueda defeated veteran fighter Jens Pulver with a brabo choke submission in the second round at ONE FC 8. Shinya Aoki: Shinya Aoki won the ONE FC lightweight title by finishing Kotetsu Boku with a rear-naked choke in the second round at ONE FC 8. Aoki remains ranked at number 3 in the lightweight division as Boku dropped to the seventh place spot.

Tomasz Narkun: Tomasz Narkun has not fought in two years so he was removed from the light heavyweight rankings. Max Nunes entered the rankings due to the removal of Narkun.

GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Rules

*This ranking system includes fighters that are not under exclusive contract to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

*Top level fighters that leave the UFC may be ranked in subsequent rankings.

*Fighters that sign exclusively to the UFC will be removed from the rankings.

*Rankings are based on a fighter's overall career results and recent performance.

*A fighter will be ranked number one if he defeats the number one ranked fighter in the weight division except under certain rare circumstances where the number two ranked fighter clearly deserves to move into the number one ranking position.

*Victories over highly ranked fighters and losses against non-ranked opponents have a larger effect on the fighters ranking position.

*A fighter will not necessarily take the place of his opponent in the rankings after a victory or a loss.

* A fighter can move up a maximum of two spots with impressive victories over a fighter ranked below him; however, there is no limit if the fighter earned a title with the victory.

* An unranked newly crowned champion who earned a title in a major league MMA promotion can enter the top ten even with a victory over an unranked fighter.

*A fighter will drop in the rankings if he does not fight regularly against high level competition.

*A top ten ranked fighter can become ranked in another weight division after one or more wins in his new weight class.

*A fighter can be ranked in two different weight divisions.

*Champions and fighters from prominent promotions will have an advantage over champions and fighters from promotions with lesser competition.

*A fighter will be removed from the rankings if he does not fight for two years.

*Fighters that are signed to multiple promotions will have their promotions listed based on the following criteria: 1) championship held in a promotion, 2) predominant promotion the fighter fights in, 3) promotion
last fought in.

*Rankings will be updated every month.

Winner of M-1 HW GP may take the top HW spot if Sergei doesn't fight someone relevant soon in MMA. After that, Bellator HW champ could also pass him up.

Sergei could start dropping in the coming months unless he gets a big win.

Great rankings as usual CDF47 GLOBAL-MMA Rankings (Outside UFC) - April 2013 424776184. Like I said before I think Koreshkov should be in the top 10 and even with Shahbulats loss to Curran he derserves to be in the top 10 as well. After Arlovskis loss to Rumble I feel Minakov deserves the top 10 spot more.

some observation on the rankings:

hw's i think thiago santos is coming off the top 10 soon!!!!

lhw's imo rumble johnson is the most talented fighter on the rankings, i dont think vegh, nakanishi nor blachowicz can beat rumble...

i know jon fitch is new in the rankings but there is no way magomedov should be higher than him, askren and fitch are the top 2 guys...

cd.....josh burkman is a beast and he should be in the top 5, not top 10..and he is in the contenders not even ranked.

at 155....jacob volkmann should be in the top 10.....he has a win over #8 ranked antonio mckee....

justin gaethje will be soon in the top 10....

CD great job my friend this are suggestion on my part...

Missed that one in your post the first time. I was responding from phone.

If Minakov wins his next fight I will give him a boost in the rankings. I think he will prob. be in the summer series coming up soon where he could move up quick if he wins. Within a few months he could be as high as 8 or so soon.

Yeah, based on overall career and even recent performance I think AA deserves the top 10 spot. He barely lost to Rumble in a great fight. If Minakov gets through the Bellator tournament coming up though, he will pass him up.

I dropped Aleks a bit since his retirement. He could be getting passed up soon by the guys directly below him. He is signed to ProFC so it will be hard for him to climb the ranks against those fighters. If a ProFC fighter takes him out, though, they could be moving into the contenders and dropping Aleks to the bottom of the contenders.

Good point, Santos will probably be dropping soon or get passed up by fighters below him.

Rumble is a beast for sure. He will be taking the number 4 spot if he wins his next fight, hopefully at WSOF 4. He has moved up to 6 pretty quick. Too bad his last fight wasn't at 205 or he could be at number 4 already.

Fitch was a tough one to place. He is a great fighter but I placed him at 4 mainly because he is 1-2-1 over the past two years. Those fights were against some great fighters but that record was just not quite there to put him at 2 or 3. If he beats Burkman at WSOF 3 coming up, he will jump to the number 2 spot behind only Askren.

Burkman got on the radar after his first WSOF win. I had him listed on my PC in the top 16 or 17. After his last win at WSOF 2, I put him in the rankings and boosted him up 1 there as well. If he beats Fitch he will be top 4 and Fitch will fall to the bottom half of the top 10. That will be a huge fight coming up for the WW rankings.

After the group of UFC fighters came over recently, I had to place Paul Sass ahead of Volkman since he beat him so recently. He even finished him with a triangle sub. I had Sass in the contenders but with the LW division there are constantly fighters coming in so even Sass dropped out. I now have both Sass and Volkman in the list on my PC in the top 20 (probably around 16 or 17 or so). I still have Sass ahead of Volkman there though because of this recent finish victory over him.

Justin Gaethje was impressive as hell against JZ. I was real impressed. Looking forward to his next fight. He could definitely see him rising the ranks pretty quick with that talent.

Thanks for the comments.

I just think we have to include them. The UFC Rankings seem like they place new signed fighters in the top 10 like they did with Mousasi. Say if Barnett signs with Bellator, he would have to be number 1 HW outside Zuffa IMO, especially with his win over Sergei. I just try to compare the recent records, the fighters they fought, and overall career performance and it's doable.

Many people think Fitch should be higher but he needs to prove it. Just because he fought in the UFC doesn´t mean he´s better than the fighters on the G-MMA Rankings. He won 1 fight since 2010 against a non ranked fighter and hasn´t finished a fight since 2007.

Any word on what weight Rumble Jonson will be fighting at next? If he wins another at HW I think he deserves to be ranked in that weight class. I generally don't like weight jumpers but to almost KO his first bigger opponent in ranked Arlovski was pretty solid.

They could maybe be allowed in Other Contenders at best until their first global fight.

These rankings look outstanding. I don't think I can find a single thing to disagree with Very Happy

It will be interesting to see where Anthony Johnson eventually lands.
