Nick Diaz WAR MMA 1 Discussion
Wed May 29, 2013 7:04 pm
Recent UFC welterweight title challenger Nick Diaz's first foray into MMA promotion is a go, according to a press release issued today.
The first event of Diaz's promotion, WAR MMA, is set for June 22 at the 10,000-seat Stockton Arena in Stockton, Calif.
The event's headliner features a welterweight contest between UFC vet and former "Skrap Pack" fighter Daniel Roberts (13-4) and Justin Baesman (12-4). A flyweight bout between WEC vet Antonio Banuelos (20-9-1) and Benny Vinson (4-1) co-headlines.
Diaz lawyer Jonathan Tweedale told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that the promotion plans to make the event available to MMA websites via online streaming.
California State Athletic Commission Executive Director Andy Foster said Diaz today completed his paperwork to become a licensed promoter in the state. He will now be required to appear in person or via phone at the CSAC's next commission meeting, which takes place June 10 in Los Angeles, to speak to commissioners before getting his license.
Notably, the event will utilize a modified ring instead of a cage, and elbow strikes will not be allowed on the ground.
"These rules are in place to encourage grapplers to advance their position instead of stalling," the release stated.
Diaz, of course, is currently retired following an unsuccessful bid for Georges St-Pierre's welterweight title at UFC 158.
Diaz and his brother, Nate Diaz, as well as Gilbert Melendez and Jake Shields, formed a group affiliated with Cesar Gracie that included Roberts.
Confirmed matchups for the summer card include:
Justin Baesman vs. Daniel Roberts
Antonio Banuelos vs. Benny Vinson
Caleb Mitchell vs. Evan Esguerra
Roy Boughton vs. Liron Wilson
Mike Persons vs. Clayton McKinney
Darin Cooley vs. Cody Gibson
Chris quitiquit vs dominic clark main card...undercard will be announced soon

Love em or hate em Diaz brothers envoke passion in mma fans and understand mma coming up from nothing and fighting oversee.
I understand Diaz style/mentality to fight his best Nick needs to feel emotion towards the fight to fo that he trash talks or mugs or you can say promote the fight hype it up.
What I don't agree with is recently nicks post fight drama rants but what ev .
Also I hate when people say the Diaz bros can't box because they don't just throw power shots.ask Robbie lawler or Paul Daley how much power Nick has.
Biggest downfall to Diaz style is lack of ground game efficiency.these guys are high level jits practitioners but only rely on it as a back up never really aggressively looking to drag it to the mat.
With there notorious cardio they would grind guys to death with grappling and relentless combos.

I'll be watching this along with GLORY. I'd donate if I had the cash, people should support Californian MMA.

Will they use a ring? What rules/scoring will they use? I´m excited to see what this promotion can bring.

I think it will probably be in a ring. The scoring might also be different seeing Nick Diaz's complaints about the scoring and judging in the ufc and stuff. Might even see cards if there's stalling or lack of action.

Hopefully they will use ring and score the whole fight instead of rounds. I don´t like the "unified rules" at all. I don´t know if they can use soccerkicks but that would be nice and no elbows.Miike wrote:I think it will probably be in a ring. Yes I thought I read something about no elbows to a grounded opponent. It would be cool to see an organisation with different rules and scoring, especially this one because I guess that was the whole point of this organisation.

I don´t like seeing a wrestler controlling the opponent on the ground trying to cut him open with elbows.Miike wrote:Yes I thought I read something about no elbows to a grounded opponent.
