Mayweather-Canelo sets new NV gate record

According to a report at BoxingScene.com, the Floyd Mayweather vs Canelo Alvarez fight at the MGM Grand on September 14 will smash the old live gate record of $18,419,200, set in 2007 by Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya, as the gate for their sold-out fight will come in at over $19,500,000.

Tickets went fast, both by noble and nefarious means (or however you want to care about this), and it was a good bet when the fight was announced that this record would fall. It's also a pretty decent bet at this point that, given the $75 high definition pricing, the pay-per-view revenue record will also go down.

Whether or not Mayweather-Canelo sets the actual PPV buys record remains to be seen, but with an excellent undercard coming together, including Garcia-Matthysse and maybe Trout-Lara, we really might be seeing the Oscar-Floyd records shattered across the board. There is at least a shot, which there has not been for any fight that has taken place since 2007, unless you ask Oscar De La Hoya, who kept saying he expected things like Mayweather-Ortiz to break the PPV number, because sometimes Oscar just lets insanity fall out of his brain and into a microphone, and no one really cares, because we mostly just accept that he's either a goof or a liar, or perhaps both, but at any rate, just your average promoter in that regard.

That nonsense I just let fall out of MY brain and onto a web site aside, this is obviously the must-see event of the year, and the buzz is enormous. The press tour was a huge success, the hype has started early and legitimately, and people are excited about this fight and this event.
