LAS VEGAS – Polarizing submission wizard Rousimar Palhares‘ WSOF debut will include a shot at the Las Vegas-based promotion’s welterweight title.
WSOF President Ray Sefo revealed to USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie that Palhares (15-5) will face the promotion’s current 170-pound champ, Steve Carl (21-3), in the headlining bout of “WSOF 9: Carl vs. Palhares” on March 29. The event’s main card airs on NBC Sports Network from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. MMAjunkie carries the prelims.
“Rousimar has long been considered one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners on the planet,” Sefo said. “But Steve Carl has submitted all three opponents he’s faced in the World Series of Fighting decagon, including his October win over Josh Burkman to become champion. I think this is going to be an incredible championship fight and a memorable main event.”
Palhares signed with WSOF in November following a 12-fight stint with MMA’s premier organization, the UFC. The UFC released him following an October win over Mike Pierce in which the Brazilian was slow to release a potentially dangerous heel-hook submission.
It was the second such incident of Palhares’ UFC run. The 33-year-old, who quickly became the target of fans and fellow fighters’ criticism, has since admitted fault and apologized for his actions. Palhares also sought the counseling of highly respected MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and has promised to avoid any future incidents.
Meanwhile, Carl has already fought three times for WSOF while tapping out Ramico Blackmon and Tyson Steele, each via rear-naked choke, before putting Burkman to sleep with a triangle choke to claim the belt.

Looks like a pretty good card.
Love watching Moraes fight and Palhares vs Carl is a good fight even though I'm not really a fan of either, I look forward to it with great interest.
Hope they can get Yushin a good opponent.
Maybe Ali should call the UFC and have them send down an Ed Herman type guy or something (Of course I'm joking :>).

A pair of fights have been added to World Series of Fighting’s March event in Las Vegas.
Mike Corey (12-3-1) will meet Shane Kruchten (11-2) in a featherweight bout, and Ozzy Dugulubgov (5-1) takes on Johnny Nunez (4-0) at lightweight.
A source with knowledge of the fight bookings confirmed the news to MMAjunkie. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because the fights have not yet been announced by WSOF.
WSOF 9 takes place March 29 at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The main card airs on NBC Sports Network following prelims that will stream on MMAjunkie. The card features a main-event welterweight title fight between champion Steve Carl and former UFC fighter Rousimar Palhares.
Corey will make his WSOF debut after three fights for Bellator MMA, where he went 1-1-1 with a win over Ronnie Mann, a draw with Chris Horodecki and a decision loss to current Bellator featherweight champion Daniel Straus in April 2012. The product of former UFC and WEC fighter Jeff Curran’s camp in Chicago’s northern suburbs has seven of his 12 wins by stoppage.
Kruchten lost the first two fights of his pro career in 2007. He then won two straight, but took nearly four years off before his next fight. Regardless, since the opening pair of losses, he has 11 straight wins – nine of them by stoppage. The 6-foot-1 Californian, who trains with the likes of K.J. Noons, will be making his WSOF debut, as well.
Dugulubgov, who trains with Renzo Gracie’s team in New York, returns to the WSOF cage after back-to-back wins for the promotion. At WSOF 2, he outpointed Chris Wade. And at WSOF 5, he submitted Andrew Osborne with a second-round Achilles lock to run his winning streak to four fights.
Nunez, a product of Syndicate MMA, made his pro debut in 2012 and has gone unbeaten at 4-0 with three stoppages. He’ll be making his promotional debut.
With the additions, the WSOF 9 card now includes:
Steve Carl vs. Rousimar Palhares – for welterweight title
Marlon Moraes vs. Josh Rettinghouse – for inaugural bantamweight title
Mike Corey vs. Shane Kruchten
Ozzy Dugulubgov vs. Johnny Nunez

Yushin Okami's long-awaited World Series of Fighting debut is just around the corner.
The veteran middleweight and former top UFC contender will meet Svetlozar Savov at WSOF 9 on March 29 in Las Vegas, WSOF officials told MMAFighting.com.
Okami, the 32-year-old native of Kanagawa, Japan, was a controversial cut from the UFC last summer. Okami (29-8) was released by the UFC after a first-round TKO loss to Jacare Souza, despite holding victories in his three previous bouts before the Souza loss.
A native of Bulgaria, Savov has put together a 12-4 record fighting on European circuits. He's won three of his past four fights, and 11 of his 12 career victories have come by way of finish.
WSOF 9, at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, is headlined by a WSOF welterweight title fight between champion Steve Carl and the debuting Rousimar Palhares.

Re: WSOF 9: Carl vs Palhares Results & Discussion
Thu Mar 13, 2014 8:46 am
At World Series of Fighting 9 on March 29, brothers and professional MMA fighters, Brenson Hansen and Bryson Hansen will fight on the same card together for the first time in their combined 11-year careers. As live in-studio guests of MMA Fight Corner, the two brothers broke down what it’s like to train together, compete together and support each other’s fight careers.
Training at Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas, the Hawaiian natives discovered MMA back in their teens when they ventured into a class with Brandon Wolff, a former X-1 and UFC competitor. They went, they trained and the rest is history.
For Bryson (6-1), 27, it’ll be his first time stepping into the cage under the WSOF banner. A former X-1 Bantamweight champion, he will take on Sean Cantor (1-0) in a bantamweight tilt on the preliminary card on WSOF.com. Cantor trains out of Wand Fight Team in Las Vegas and went 3-1 as an amateur.
“This is my first fight actually in Vegas, so it’s really exciting,” said Bryson. “My family is coming up here. All I want to do is just show my best.”
Just prior to Bryson’s fight, Brenson (5-2) will take on Boostayre Nefarios (2-1), a Las Vegas-based fighter who trains out of Syndicate MMA and Sunset Boxing & MMA and fought all 5 of his amateur contests locally.
“This will be my 4th fight with World Series of Fighting and it’s always awesome to fight on World Series of Fighting. And every time that I’ve fought with them so far, they always take care of me. Every time you go out there, they always want you to go out there and put on an amazing show. They don’t really care about the outcome, they just want an exciting fight and that’s what we came here to do,” said Brenson.
Brenson, 24, added how special this fight camp has been for him to train alongside his older brother.
phot credit: Dave Carney – MMA Fight Corner
“It’s also so exciting to be on a card with my brother because usually when one of us is training, the other one’s getting ready, the other one is fighting. So it’s better to fight the same night and have some vacation together.”
The Hansen’s will also have their Xtreme Couture teammates, Jimmy Jones and Gil Guardado also battling it out that night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. To top it off, WSOF president Ray Sefo is among one of the main coaches the Hansen’s train with which Bryson said can add pressure on fight night to perform.
Being that this is Bryson’s WSOF debut and he has about a dozen family members coming from the islands to see him square off against Cantor, he wants nothing more than to see his hand raised come March 29. Standing in his way is Cantor, who he knows will hold nothing back from the moment the bell rings.
“He’s a local boy and what I mean is he’s from Hawaii,” said Bryson. “From what I’ve seen he’s aggressive. I guess we’re going to meet in the middle and slug it out.”
While Bryson sees his more extensive professional experience as an advantage, he also admitted that he sees every adversary he faces as “dangerous” and “well-rounded.”
Meanwhile, Brenson has fought three times with WSOF. In his debut with the promotion, Hansen put himself on the map scoring a flying knee KO over Tom Marcellino. Now, he’s looking to rebound from an outing at WSOF 8 where he was on the losing end of a controversial split decision against Freddy Assuncao. Looking ahead to a new challenge in his feathweight tilt against Nefarios has motivated him.
“It’s good to have a game opponent,” said Brenson. “From what I’ve seen he’s going to meet me in the middle too. Kind of after that flying knee knockout, I’m kind of chasing guys around the ring lately. I’m just excited to have someone meet me in the middle.”
Of course, the loss to Assuncao has resonated with him. But, because of what happened on the scorecards, Hansen promises to leave nothing to chance at WSOF 9.
“Right after that fight, I was kind of just in disbelief. I went in the back, I sat down, I didn’t feel like I lost, but it doesn’t help my bank account. It’s kind of not the best terms when you get half to show up, half to win,” explained Brenson. “I didn’t really play it to the judges. I thought I was winning. My corner was Brad Tavares and my brother Bryson Hansen. I just go off of what they say. They say, ‘Just keep doing what your doing and you’re winning the fight’. And I just kept doing what I was doing and I thought I’d come out with the win. I guess I just got hometowned.
“Everybody that has anything to do with MMA thought I won the fight. But the 3 people that mattered – the judges – didn’t think so. I learned the hard way that night.”
Needless to say, Brenson has plans of making a statement on the WSOF.com preliminary card, as does his brother. Years ago, the two travelled 3,000 miles away from home with high hopes of competing at top high level. Seems today, the Hansen brothers are making waves in Fight Capital, USA .
“This is kind of the dream for me,” said Bryson. “There’s some young boys coming up too from our team back home and Brad Tavares. We’re all kind of the same team and we were supposed to move here to chase this.”
Both Bryson and Brenson’s fights at WSOF 9 will air as part of the preliminary card which will be live streamed on WSOF.com. Tickets for World Series of Fighting 9, which start at just $39, are on sale now at Ticketmaster.com. Tickets can also be purchased at The Joint box office or by phone at (800) 745-3000. The night’s featured fights air live on NBCSN at 9 p.m. ET (6 p.m. PT local time) following preliminary bouts that stream on World Series of Fighting’s official website, WSOF.com.

Re: WSOF 9: Carl vs Palhares Results & Discussion
Tue Mar 18, 2014 5:34 pm
World Series of Fighting welterweight champion Steve Carl broke his silence regarding his thoughts on fighting Rousimar Palhares with Fight Parrot Monday night. This coming after Sherdog reported that the Brazilian was being forced to fly to Las Vegas early to undergo extensive testing by the NSAC (Nevada State Athletic Commission) due to previous infractions with elevated testosterone levels.
If Palhares fails the pre-fight testing for next Saturday’s WSOF 9, the promotion will be left scrambling for a late replacement. According to Vice President Ali Abdel-Aziz, Tyler Stinson would be bumped out of his fight against Josh Burkman, and into the main event spot if necessary.
Read on to see how champion Steve Carl feels about the situation surrounding his most troublesome opponent to date.
WHAT’S YOUR TAKE ON THIS SITUATION SURROUNDING PALHARES AND THE NSAC’S REQUIREMENTS?
“I’m not really too worried about it because if he’s preparing for a fight, he should have cycled off correctly. By the time they test him it should be out of his system. Let’s be honest, once a steroid user, always a steroid user. There’s a lot of guys in our sport that use [steroids], lots of guys I know, and they all just cycle off and let there testosterone levels get down. So, I think [Palhares] will be just fine.”
WHAT IS YOUR STANCE ON TRT AND STEROID USE? DO YOU SUPPORT IT?
“Absolutely not. We all have to deal with that. For you to say ‘I have a low testosterone level’ so I’m going to triple myself and make me twice as good as you, that’s not fair to the other guys.”
“I’m not even a big supplement user, I barely take protein or vitamins. To face guys with abnormal athletic abilities is unfair. Even if we are fighting on a level playing field, if your testosterone was 3-4 times the level of mine during training, then your body will be much more conditioned than mine.”
IN THE EVENT THAT PALHARES DOES FAIL HIS DRUG TEST AND IS UNABLE TO COMPETE, WHAT WILL HAPPEN?
“Well, in the Sherdog report, [Ali Abdel-Aziz] said I’d face Tyler Stinson, and they’d shuffle someone else for Josh Burkman. Which, it’s weird not putting Burkman back in there since he was kind of there go-to guy for a while, and instead giving Stinson, who only has one fight which was on the preliminary card, a shot at the title. But, if you saw Tyler Stinson and myself fight in 2010 in Bellator it was an amazing fight. So, it will be fireworks either way.”
BACK TO PALHARES, DO YOU THINK HE DESERVED A TITLE SHOT IN WSOF RIGHT AWAY?
“Absolutely not. Let’s be honest, the guy is 1-2 in his last 3 fights, he’s only won 1 fight in the last 2 and a half years and he got popped for steroids in that time. He came off one suspension to be put on another suspension, and coming off that suspension he gets a title shot. He absolutely does not deserve a title shot but at the same time he is amazingly talented and he is the right caliber for the fight.”
GIVEN HIS HISTORY AND HABIT FOR HOLDING SUBMISSIONS, ARE YOU WORRIED OR NERVOUS ABOUT FIGHTING HIM?
“Going into every fight you have moments of mental weakness. I will say going into this fight I’ve experienced more mental weakness than in the past. This is a really scary guy to get in the cage with, and there’s a lot to worry about. But at the end of the day, I can worry and be as mentally weak as I want as long as I get in that cage and I’m ready to fight.”
ANY SPECIAL TRAINING FOR PALHARES AND HIS SUBMISSION THREATS?
“I haven’t worked extensively on leg locks, I haven;t worked extensively on anything, but my attitude has changed. I’ve tightened my game up to where I don’t expose myself as much. Usually when I hit the ground I posture up and start pounding, but now I stay tight and keep my legs in. I’m more or less worried about not getting into the positions to make myself vulnerable than worrying about fighting out of a leg lock because what he does in there, it’s really scary water to be in.”
DO YOU FEEL LIKE THE UNDERDOG GOING INTO THIS FIGHT, EVEN THOUGH YOU ARE THE CHAMPION?
“Absolutely, I guarantee I’m an underdog going into the fight.”
DO YOU FEEL LIKE YOU’RE NOT GETTING ENOUGH RESPECT OR CREDIT AS CHAMPION?
“Yes. Both from the outside view and the inside view. But, even I can stand back and look at it and understand why. During the Burkman fight, nobody expected me to win, I was a huge underdog. World Series promoted Burkman, and that was about it. At the event, they even had a booth where you could take a cut out cardboard picture of Josh and not myself.”
“I’m not being pushed as one of the go-to guys, I’m not being promoted so I feel like I’m still being overlooked.”
“Smashing through Palhares is going to make people turn their heads, and if not, I don’t even care.”
Be sure to watch Steve Carl defend his belt against Rousimar Palhares in the main event of WSOF 9 on Saturday, March 29th from the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will broadcast on NBC Sports Network, and Fight Parrot will be on location providing complete coverage all fight week long.
