No Holds Barred: Dr. Shaka Zulu on the African Origin of Martial Arts Empty No Holds Barred: Dr. Shaka Zulu on the African Origin of Martial Arts

Thu Feb 21, 2013 2:32 am
On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman speaks with martial artist, and producer and co-host of the Official True School Radio Show on WHCR 90.3 FM in New York, Dr. Shaka Zulu (https://www.facebook.com/drshaka.zulu.3).

Dr. Shaka Zulu is also part of the Universal Zulu Nation, and is an organizer of the 11th annual Kemetic Masters of the Martial Arts (https://www.facebook.com/events/151069135042863).

Kemet, as he explained in this interview, is the original and indigenous name for what is now called Egypt.

This event takes place this Saturday, February 23, at the National Black Theatre at 2033 5th Avenue between 125th and 126th Streets in Harlem, New York. It will feature a special picture presentation by Dr. Shaka Zulu, live demonstrations in numerous styles and disciplines of the martial arts, a hip-hop dance showcase, holistic health information, and more. All are welcome.

We spoke with Dr. Shaka Zulu by phone Wednesday night, and discussed this event and the African origin of the martial arts and combat sports.

A lot of people, he said in this interview, tend to think of the origins of martial arts "as coming from out of China or Japan." This is historically inaccurate, he said.

"The root of martial arts actually comes from out of Africa, or Nubia, or Kemet."

We discussed the mountain of historical evidence for this analysis, including some of the remaining drawings and artifacts from ancient days, such as the tomb drawings from at least 4000 years ago depicting hundreds of wrestling positions and martial arts techniques. We also discussed the program for the Kemetic Masters of the Martial Arts event, Malcolm X and the martial arts, the need to know the real history of the martial arts including MMA and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, how martial arts and combat sports should promote positive values and not thuggery, and much more.

Thanks. That's what we do, tell the truth. But many MMA and combat sports fans are not ready for the truth, unfortunately.

Thanks. This story is definitely underappreciated and concealed by many. If the wrestling community got it out there more, it certainly would help wrestling's popularity and dire situation facing Olympic extinction. I fear the worst will happen, although fight for the best.

Following the whole thing that has been going on with respect to wrestling, I can't help but to get the impression that it is all purely political.

They do not care about what people want, and popular outrage will only have a relatively miniscule effect.

They have their own agenda, which has very little or nothing to do with integrity of sport.

Now, I will not get into FILA, etc. In part, because I have no knowledge of the goings on in this respect. But mostly, because I am here talking about the IOC.

The comments coming out of IOC executive members, were interpreted by some as leaving some sort of door open. I personally, interpreted them as dismissive and arrogant, and indeed still worse, elitist and of the sort of rhetoric as to be concealing something.

Now, I still truly believe that wrestling can win back a spot in the Olympics, in St. Petersburg. But, I can't help but to be not fully optimistic about it. They knew goddamn well what they were doing when they removed wrestling. Even though it goes against logical sense to have done so, they obviously don't give a fuck.

The Olympics have become thoroughly corrupt.

When I walk around my city, and I see the signs that read "Tokyo Candidate City for 2020 Olympics", I just want to tear them all down.

That's the first coherent thing I've been able to write about the whole situation, since it erupted. Other than that, I've just been screaming into the woods. Or, doing things like dropping f-bombs on Eddie Goldman's Facebook thread (for which, I do apologize).

I guess it's the second coherent thing.

I wrote a post reflecting on some thoughts I garnered from some somewhat older Japanese ladies and gentleman at a party recently, also. But that was more reporting, not really giving my thoughts.

By the way, Eddie, I heard from Lilly ( Wink haha), that you are a dude who likes to party a bit, and is everything goes, and all.

I just thought it was not really proper rhetoric for your Facebook page, when I commented in that way ("what the fuck is this?" kind of thing, I mean).

I heard it from you, first though.
