Bellator champ Straus on Curran rematch: 'There's a tournament format for a reason'

Bellator MMA featherweight champion Daniel Straus said he has no problem fighting Pat Curran for a third time, but Friday’s Bellator 112 headliner admits he’d like to see the organization stick to its tournament format.

Despite a convincing win over then-champ Curran (19-5 MMA, 9-2 BMMA) at Bellator 106 in November, Straus (22-4 MMA, 8-1 BMMA) was booked for an immediate rematch (or, technically, a rubber match since Curran beat Straus at XFO 29 in 2009) at Friday’s Spike TV-televised event. Bellator officials invoked their championship rematch clause, which allows them to book rematches (instead of waiting for the losing fighter to win another tournament) when they deem it appropriate.

“I have no problem fighting Pat Curran again,” Straus recently told MMAjunkie. “If they feel like he deserves a rematch, then that’s what he’ll get, although there’s a tournament format for a reason. I feel like if you’re going to set up a tournament style and make rules for it, then that’s why you need to do and stick with.”

It's a rubber match and Curran has given Bellator so many HLs that they basically owe it to him. I'm perfectly happy with this trilogy fight and like to think this one will bring out the best in each fighter.
