Peter Aerts Is Finally Back In Just Under A Week

With the upcoming big It's Showtime card headlined by Peter Aerts vs. Tyrone Spong coming up, I feel like it needs to be reiterated how big of a deal the return of Peter Aerts is.
Aerts' last fight was on December 11 of last year, where he stopped "Mr. Kamikaze" in the first round in Japan. Yeah, I know what you're thinking about that. That "return" to action in Japan was quite obscure and against a nobody so we'll just disregard it, as we should when considering his return. Really, his last real fight was against Alistair Overeem in the finals of the K-1 World Grand Prix in December of 2010, the last K-1 World Grand Prix to happen.
Aerts has fought the best of the best pretty much consistently since the early 90s, on the world's biggest stage, which is quite crazy when you sit and think of it. So it comes as no surprise when his return fight is against one of the best, LiverKick's #10 ranked heavyweight, Tyrone Spong. This will be Aerts' first fight for It's Showtime and really, his first fight outside of K-1 since 1995. Things have changed and as of right now, It's Showtime is one of the biggest stages in the world in the sport of kickboxing.
K-1 went on a major hiatus and with it, so did Aerts. He was owed a lot of money by themand decided to sit out, hoping he'd get it and that K-1 would come back strong. Well, needless to say, that didn't happen last year and with things still uncertain at the beginning of this year, Aerts signed on for his, at the time, retirement fight for It's Showtime on June 30. Shortly after that, new kickboxing superpower, GLORY came in and with the long bankroll Pierre Andurand, signed Peter Aerts, effectively making his fight on June 30 a "Benelux retirement fight."
What all this really means, is that Peter Aerts is back in the mix at the top of heavyweight kickboxing. Aerts may be 41 years old and may have tons of wear and tear, but one thing hasn't changed, and that's that he's still a top fighter in the heavyweight division. He beat Semmy Schilt a year and a half ago. Schilt didn't fight at all last year and came back as his usual, dominant self, at 38 years old. What's to say that Aerts can't return to his normal self in the ring? He was still a top heavyweight in 2010.
Against Tyrone Spong he's in the ring with a fighter 15 years younger than him, looking to add a win over his first real top heavyweight onto his resume. He's faced this situation before, like when he fought and defeated Errol Zimmerman in 2009. I wouldn't put it past him to win again on June 30. That's just Peter Aerts for you.
