Boxing will always be bigger than mma, no matter what Dana says.

Boxing is a true global sport and bigger than mma but is not on the golden age anymore, mma will fall too. But since you read some Dawson numbers, this happened last year also. The fighters that you have mentioned are already superstars not up-and-coming fighters.

Although the official numbers have yet to be released, the buzz among the boxing media is that the October 15th pay-per-view featuring the Bernard Hopkins vs. Chad Dawson main event was a major disappointment for Golden Boy Promotions.
According to the twitter feed of ESPN’s Dan Rafael, Golden Boy quoted a buy rate of “well under 100,000.” In response, Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports tweeted the number he had heard– 40,000.

i watched the canelo-lopez card......big numbers there, but the card was stacked....the showtime-golden boy partnership is paying dividends, quality fight cards from top to bottom...
the next one is october 20th in brooklyn's new arena garcia vs erik morales but also mallinagi and quillin for free, good cards are going to draw big...

Canelo could still be considered up-and-coming with his youth, but being a champion and all kind of takes that title away.
Chavez Jr, on the otherhand, is a major Mexican star already. He's already proven himself as legitimate so I don't think he deserves the title of up-and-comer when he's already reached the apex of his career.

saying Boxing is dead is like saying WWE is dead also,
there will always be people watching it no matter what
it's just that with the short amount of time it took for MMA to grow, it's natural for people to say that the other sports are dead

The only thing that lacks on Canelo is a legendary fight or one elite opponent (who is not too old), everything else he already has, they have major deals on Mexico w/ powerful networks behind them, too much for consider them just up-and-coming

Canello beat Chavez on Mexican TV. The ratings were similar, but Alvarez drew a bit more.

Canelo beats Chavez Jr. in Mexican TV Ratings War, Fights Generate Astounding Numbers
Paul Magno | Sep 17, 2012 | Comments 1
In their first ever head to head TV battle, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez won the ratings war last Saturday against fellow 20-something Mexican star, Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.
According to Ratings Mexico, Alvarez, who faced Josesito Lopez in defense of his WBC junior middleweight title, had a little over 18.1 million viewers tuned in, translating to a 15.1 rating with a 36.6 share for Televisa
Meanwhile, Chavez Jr., defending his WBC middleweight belt against Sergio Martinez, had about 16.2 million Mexicans watching his fight, registering a 13.5 rating and 34.2 share for TV Azteca.
All together, the numbers mean that about 34.3 million Mexicans watched boxing on the evening of September 15th with an astounding 70.8% of all television viewers in Mexico during that time slot tuned into one of the two bouts. To make the numbers even more amazing, both fights took place during traditional Mexican Independence Day festivities, at a time when large outdoor celebrations are commonplace all over the nation.
The highest rated fight of all time in Mexico remains Juan Manuel Marquez-Manny Pacquiao III, which drew 37.2 million viewers and generated a 31 rating.
