Gegard Mousasi: 'Next Fight I'm Going to Train in the US'
Sun Dec 18, 2011 5:48 pm
"I think, because I don't have good training. I have only one trainer. And that's wrestling, they were helping me with technical wrestling. But I don't have a conditioning trainer, I don't have a standup trainer, I don't have a jiu-jitsu trainer. I don't have any good sparring partners, high level. I don't have a nutrition(ist). I don't know what all these other fighters have. I mean, I think there's a huge (room for) improvement there. Next fight I'm going to train in the US with a good camp."

Man, if that dude actually learned to stuff takedowns, he'd be a force.

No doubt, he´s a natural talent. Mousasi doesn´t get hit much and I´ve never seen him knocked down.Jingles wrote:Man, if that dude actually learned to stuff takedowns, he'd be a force.

The problem is, if he sticks around LHW and decides he wants to be a UFC LHW, he's going to seriously struggle.

Mousasis fighting style fits better in the ring. Hopefully he will defend his DREAM title soon.

Mousassi's style fits better not fighting wrestlers. If an out of shape Jardine can do what he did (he didn't actually beat him, but he got him down more than he should have) I loathe to think what Thiago Silva, Rashad, Phil Davis or Jones could do to him. LHW is not a good division to have less than stellar takedown defence.

^ Sadly I agree. Mousasi is good off his back but he would drop decisions to some UFC fighters because of scoring rules and because of his wrestling. Right now his takedown defense and ground is good enough to fuck up people like Thiago Silva, but Rashad and Phil Davis would just wrestle him like Mo did. I can see Rashad being cocky, standing with Mousasi and getting KTFO, but who knows.
I bet Gegard would do great against their middleweights and I agree that he may possibly be unbeatable in a ring.
Also, I can see Gegard beating Shogun and Rampage and any of the UFC LHW old guard at this point.

Can I just point out that Mousassi failed to finish a gassed out Jardine. The chance of him finishing Rampage or Shogun is slight.
Also, depends which middleweights. Maia? Probably (though, bizarrely, Maia recently discovered what a punch is, so good for him) noted bad fighter Bisping? definitely. Okami would do terrible things to him, so would Chael. Palhares would also give him some serious grief. Basically anyone with solid takedowns and a not terrible chin is doubtful.

Jardine is a mystery wrapped in a riddle wrapped in a ugly beard. Remember, Rampage couldn't finish him either. Mousasi would outpoint both Rampage and Shogun standing. Rampage would have to hug him against the cage to win.
Okami would get knocked out and lose in a humiliating fashion. Chael is an Olympian, he would be major problems for Mousasi, like he is a problem for anyone. But Mousasi also has subs off his back, he is not completely helpless.

Keith Jardine is a slow, gassy old man with weird striking, a cool beard, one facial expression and a strange voice who took the fight on two weeks notice. He's also far from impossible to finish. Scoring repeated shots on him and failing to finish him the way Gegard did suggests that you may not have magical knockout power.
I don't know why you think that about Okami. He's been knocked out twice in his entire career, by a top form Anderson Silva, who still took a round and a half to do it, and once 8 years ago.

Keith Jardine is an unpredictable, experienced MMA fighter with a horrible beard, a terrible face and an awesome nickname, who trains every day of his life with top coaches regardless if he has to fight or not. You are judging Mousasi abilities by one, possibly bad fight. I can point you to a lot of fights where he knocked people out. He has 18 wins by KO.
Okami got knocked out more than twice. You forgot he got KO'd with an upkick.

Jardine was breathing hard before the first round was over. I don't think it's that controversial a statement to say that Jardine was clearly not in top form.
I know he has a bunch of other KOs, but there's no one on that list where you go "goddamn, no one had ever knocked that guy out before" He has KO power, but clearly not the ability to knock out anyone. If he'd knocked out Mark Hunt, that would have been mind blowing.
Someone hasn't seen that upkick fight, he wasn't KO'd. I'm not going to speculate about whether he played it up to get the DQ, but he's still concious. Not to mention that it was by the same guy who just knocked him out, who knocks out pretty much everyone and is arguably one of the best strikers in the sport. Okami really doesn't have any kind of glass jaw.

Okami got rocked by the upkick. He was barely conscious. It was probably enough for Herb Dean to call it a KO. But you right, maybe Yushin would give Gegard a good fight. I would def watch it.

Someone with an ability to control distance, good takedowns and really good top control? Yeah, I can't imagine how he'd be able to do anything to Gegard
I should emphasise that I do not think Gegard is a terrible fighter or anything, but his takedown defence is highly questionable. Jardine got him down and did nothing, because he was gassing. And has never done much from the top. Yushin will not gas and is enormous.

Again you are judging everything by Jardine fight. I have followed Mousasi his whole career. I would never count him out against Okami...

Getting consistently outwrestled by Keith Jardine while you're still punching him in the face is the sort of thing people are going to extrapolate from. It would be like getting knocked out by Fujita, the sort of thing casts a huge shadow of doubt over that particular skillset. It's obvious he's a very good striker and has some cool submissions, but his takedown defence is questionable (not terrible, but questionable)
It's also not a one off. Sokodjou and King Mo both got him down. Both did nothing with the position because King Mo was obviously stalling and Sokodjou is fucking terrible and is better at finding ways to lose fights than Dennis Kang, but they got the takedowns pretty easily.
I just checked Fightmetric (I know, it shouldn't be quoted, but I was curious) Jardine got 6 takedowns in that fight. Admittedly, it was 6 of 13, but still. Do you want to know who else has been taken down 6 times by Keith Jardine? No one. The closest is Mike Whitehead, who was taken down 5 times. So there you go. Statistically, Gegard got wrestled the most of anyone Jardine fought.

^ Dude, Jardine got his ass spoon fed to him in that fight. Mousasi literally took zero damage.

Sorry, wrestling is the most important. If I out wrestle you I win, even if I fail at wrestling you more than half the time.
Its the intention that counts. The intention to wrestle you.
He he, what are you gonna do about it, eh? Wow, clean, hard, accurate punches to my face.
Yeah, that cute and all, but take a look at that clock. Its counting down and I'm on top of you, he he.
Man this is easy, I just gotta wait and I w......oh oh I think the ref will stand us up, let me improve position.
There, I have moved a little and even threw a punch. I win.
This was awesome. Looking forward to the next time I fight, which should be in about a year.

I know, I never said mousassi didn't win that fight. What I said is that it's not unfair to extrapolate from that and other fights that his takedown defence is questionable at best. Now while wrestling is not the be all and end all, against ground fighters with good top control like Thiago Silva, Rashad Evans, Phil Davis, Jon Jones, Alexander Gustaffson and Stephan Bonnar (who, while he's too often a crazy brawler, has excellent top control) It may prove to be a rather large flaw. That's the extent of my point about Gegard Mousassi.

I miss read, I apologize.
I feel like y'all have kinda gotten off subject. I agree with Gegard. He needs to get his euro ass to the US. He needs to train with better teams.

The only thing that Gegard needs to train is wrestling TDD and thats it. His trips, fantastic kicks and punches were far better than any American fighter. I guess if Gegard needs to train his wrestling in the US then JDS, Jon Jones, GSP, and Anderson Silva needs to train in Holland to polish up on their kickboxing.

Difference being, the States have Duke Roufus. Don't exactly see a world class wrestling team in Holland.

He should definately improve his TDD. I thought that he would do that after the King Mo fight, but I was disappointed when I watched the Jardine fight and recently the OSP fight. Mousasi is a really good fighter and has the potential to be a top 3 LHW, but you have to have a really good TDD the way todays MMA is built with all these rules that favors the wrestlers.
