Trainer for Bellator bantamweight champ Eduardo Dantas says February return likely
Fri Oct 26, 2012 6:51 pm
Bellator bantamweight champ Eduardo Dantas is likely to return to the cage in February.
Andre Pederneiras, Dantas' trainer and manager at Nova Uniao, told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) that his fighter is restricted from contact for a month following a training session that left him dizzy and nauseous.
"He can train in jiu-jitsu and wrestling, but he can't [take] a punch or kick to his head," wrote Pederneiras via email.
Pederneiras said the dizziness incident took place two weeks ago. He took the fighter to see a doctor, who ran neurological tests. Those turned out fine, but as a precautionary measure, the doctor precluded Dantas from sparring while he recovers.
In August, the Bellator champ suffered a brutal knockout loss to Tyson Nam at an event in Brazil. The loss nixed an upcoming title fight with Season 6 tourney champ Marcos Galvao at Bellator 79 on Nov. 2.
"This week I brought him back to the doctor and he told us that in February he can fight without any problem," Pederneiras wrote.
The two work out of the famed Nova Uniao gym in Rio de Janeiro alongside UFC featherweight champ Jose Aldo and interim UFC bantamweight champ Renan Barao, among many others.
According to an official, a well-being check on Dantas from Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney prompted the cancellation of the booking at Bellator 79.
Dantas (14-3 MMA, 4-0 BFC) won the title in April with a second-round submission of champ Zach Makovsky at Bellator 65. His loss to Nam snapped a seven-fight win streak that included four wins under the Bellator banner.
