A look back at Jmma on NYE 総合格闘技 PART 1
Tue Dec 11, 2012 12:04 pm
A look back at Jmma on NYE a tradition that has been going on for over a decade now.
It has brought us some of the best moments in MMA history.
To start off let me start by saying I wrote this for our Facebook page however I quickly noticed Facebook is not capable of properly displaying a write up like this, so I linked it here. Also a fair warning I am no professional by any means at doing this-so keep that in mind. * My poor atempt at Kanji is simply just a attempt to get the word spread further. I will start with 2003.
First off here are some pre event pics for a shockwave event
Lets take a look at jmma NYe shows from the past. : Part 1
PRIDE オタクまつり Shockwave 2003
It took place at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan on December 31, 2003. Attendance 39,716
This was the show that really started the PRIDE tradition of having a nye show , however they were not the only show on that night
K-1 'Premium 2003 Dynamite' and also Inoki Bom Baye 2003 was on tap.
First lets take a look at the one I know the most about Shockwave 2003 AKa Otoko Matsuri
Heres the matches and results for that night
Quinton Jackson vs. Ikuhisa Minowa
Jackson defeated Minowa via TKO (punches) at 1:05 of round 2.
Heath Herring vs. Paulo Cesar Silva
Herring defeated Silva via submission (rear-naked choke) at 0:35 of round 3.
Hayato Sakurai vs. Daiju Takase
Sakurai defeated Takase via unanimous decision.
Murilo Rua vs. Akira Shoji
Rua defeated Shoji via KO (flying knee) at 2:24 of round 1.
Royce Gracie vs. Hidehiko Yoshida
Time expired, bout was ruled a draw at 10:00 of round 2.
Don Frye vs. Gary Goodridge
Goodridge defeated Frye via KO (head kick) at 0:39 of round 1.
Daniel Gracie vs. Wataru Sakata
Gracie defeated Sakata via submission (armbar) at 7:12 of round 1.
Yuki Kondo vs. Mario Sperry
Kondo defeated Sperry via TKO (doctor stoppage) at 3:27 of round 1.
Rony Sefo vs. Kiyoshi Tamura
Tamura defeated Sefo via submission (armbar) at 2:20 of round 1.
Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Kazushi Sakuraba
Nogueira defeated Sakuraba via unanimous decision.
Over all not a bad start for PRIDEs NYE tradition
A few notes this event had the rematch between Yoshida and Royce Gracie that the Gracies wanted as the claim the first fight was BS, however imo you can clearly see Royce's arm go limp.
This was Yuki Kondos only win in PRIDE, Hard to believe he was so competitive and had a good streak going in Pancrase at the time.
Murilo Rua shows off his ninja skills with a flying knee KO
Minowaman Last longer then thought possible against rampage- Minowaman legend is born.
Gary Goodridge high kick ko over Frye was shocking no body saw that coming-nobody
Nogueira vs Sakuraba was a classic matchup- Many clamied Saku would be given the nod if it were a decision- they were wrong.
overall a classic night of Fights from the best EVER mma organization.
Now some a few thing from the nights other events im not as knowing about but do know enough to share this.

Great work PND.
PRIDE and FEG put on some of the best MMA shows on NYE ever. GLORY/DREAM is really delivering this year as well. Every year, there is hardly any other event I look forward to more.

Cool that Inoki Bom-Ba-Ye has been doing the NYE events since 2003. Hopefully they focus more on mma in the future.

I don't think it'll ever really go beyond what they're doing this year honestly, unless Inoki decides to do a card based solely off his own products against MMA bred fighters, which would be cool too.
Inoki loves his MMA, but I think this will stay an IGF centered event.
