Zoila Gurgel Enters Free Agency Period After Last Fight with Bellator...
Thu Dec 13, 2012 2:43 pm
Bellator women’s champion Zoila Gurgel is now officially a free agent, and will begin fielding offers for her next fight in the coming weeks.
Sources close to the fighter confirmed to MMAWeekly.com on Thursday that Gurgel is now free to negotiate with any promotion of her choosing following her last fight with Bellator last weekend.
Gurgel still stands as Bellator’s only women’s champion, capturing the belt at 115lbs before eventually moving back to the 125lb weight class more recently.
Following more than a year away from fighting due to reconstructive knee surgery, Gurgel returned to action earlier this year, picking up a win over Casey Noland in her return bout for Bellator.
Unfortunately, Gurgel didn’t fare as well in her next bout as she was submitted by fellow Ohio based fighter Jessica Eye by standing arm triangle choke in just 58 seconds last weekend at Bellator 83.
Now Gurgel will enter a free agency period where she can begin looking for her next option for fighting. Obviously a return to Bellator is always open, but the promotion isn’t planning a tournament for the 125lb division at least during season 8 of their shows that begin airing on Spike TV in January 2013.
With a 12-week format planned, that would mean at the earliest the promotion couldn’t hope to do a 125lb women’s tournament until probably summer 2013.
One likely landing spot for Gurgel could be women’s fight promotion Invicta Fighting Championships, who hold their next show in early January.
Gurgel will continue to work and wait as her next fight is negotiated as she looks to find a home in 2013.
