BELLATOR 91...CHRISTIAN M'PUMBU VS. ATTILA VEGH...FEB. 28...full fight card...
Mon Jan 07, 2013 2:52 pm
In the first official defense of his title, Bellator light-heavyweight champion Christian M'Pumbu (18-4-1 MMA, 3-1 UFC) will meet recent tournament winner Attila Vegh (28-4-2 MMA, 4-0 BFC) next month at Bellator 91.
Officials today announced the event and title fight.
Bellator 91 takes place Feb. 28 at Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho, N.M. The main card airs on Spike TV following prelims on Spike.com.
M'Pumbu scored three consecutive knockouts to win Bellator's Season 4 tournament, which also netted him the inaugural light-heavyweight title. However, while he awaited a tournament to determine his first title challenger, he suffered a decision loss to Travis Wiuff in a non-title fight in late 2011. The defeat snapped the French-Congolese fighter's 7-1 run, and it remains his most recent appearance.
"I am extremely excited about this opportunity to defend my Bellator light-heavyweight world championship," M'Pumbu stated. "I look forward to getting back in the cage and putting on a show for all of the amazing Bellator fans throughout the world."
Vegh, a Slovakian fighter, won a 2012 "Summer Series" tournament to earn the title shot. His tournament run included a submission win over Zelg Galesic, a split-decision victory over Emanuel Newton, and a 25-second knockout of Wiuff. His current win streak now stands at eight fights.
"This fight is all I am focused on," Vegh stated. "I've never worked harder for something in my life, and on Feb. 28, I will hold that belt and become the new Bellator world champion."

Bellator does not seem to be numbering their shows anymore, despite what the junkies say.

Sucks that Sarnavskiy is out. Interested to see how saad holds up against Brooks though. I would like to see the winner of that fight take the tournament. I'm going with Will Brooks now that my first pick got smashed in the first round.

The Bellator 91 card is complete with seven preliminary-card bouts ahead of four main-card bouts that include three tournament semifinal bouts and a light heavyweight title fight.
Bellator 91's main event is a 205-pound title fight between champion Christian M'Pumbu (18-4-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC) and Attila Vegh (28-4-2 MMA, 4-0 BFC). In addition, the main card features Season 8 lightweight tournament semifinal bouts between Saad Awad (13-4 MMA, 1-1 BFC) and Will Brooks (9-0 MMA, 1-0 BFC), plus Jason Fischer (6-1 MMA, 3-1 BFC) vs. David Rickels (12-1 MMA, 6-1 BFC). The main card opens with a featherweight tourney semifinal bout between Magomedrasul "Frodo" Khasbulaev (19-5 MMA, 3-0 BFC) and Marlon Sandro (24-4 MMA, 7-2 BFC)
Fischer earned a spot in the semifinals on the strength of a first-round rear-naked choke win over Sevak Magakian less than two weeks ago at Bellator 87. But it was a broken hand for Alexander "Tiger" Sarnavskiy that truly netted Fischer his shot, as he wasn't part of the original eight in the tourney. The victory was his third submission win under the Bellator banner since his debut this past April and it helped him rebound from the only loss of his career. In November, Fischer fought Rickels at Bellator 82 and dropped a unanimous decision.
On the main card at Bellator 87, Rickels took a unanimous decision from Lloyd Woodard (12-3 MMA, 2-3 BFC) in the opening round of the Season 8 tournament, winning 29-28 on all three judges' scorecards. That improved him to an impressive 6-1 in the promotion, with the lone loss coming to recent welterweight title challenger Karl Amoussou.
The preliminary card includes bantamweight bouts between Adrian Cruz (3-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC) and Nick Gonzalez (3-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC); Felipe Chavez (5-3 MMA, 0-0 BFC) vs. Russell Wilson (2-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC); Kevin Croom (7-4 MMA, 1-0 BFC) vs. Angelo Sanchez (12-3 MMA, 0-0 BFC); and Josh Montoya (10-7 MMA, 0-0 BFC) vs. Ed West (17-8 MMA, 3-3 BFC). At heavyweight, Josh Appelt (8-2 MMA, 1-0 BFC) meets Josh Lanier (3-6 MMA, 0-0 BFC). Blas Avena (7-6 MMA, 0-0 BFC) takes on Lenny Lovato (8-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) in a lightweight fight. And in a women's bantamweight bout, Holly Holm (2-0 MMA, 0-0 BFC) will meet an opponent still to be named.
