LAS VEGAS – Polarizing submission wizard Rousimar Palhares‘ WSOF debut will include a shot at the Las Vegas-based promotion’s welterweight title.

WSOF President Ray Sefo revealed to USA TODAY Sports and MMAjunkie that Palhares (15-5) will face the promotion’s current 170-pound champ, Steve Carl (21-3), in the headlining bout of “WSOF 9: Carl vs. Palhares” on March 29. The event’s main card airs on NBC Sports Network from Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Las Vegas. MMAjunkie carries the prelims.

“Rousimar has long been considered one of the best Brazilian jiu-jitsu practitioners on the planet,” Sefo said. “But Steve Carl has submitted all three opponents he’s faced in the World Series of Fighting decagon, including his October win over Josh Burkman to become champion. I think this is going to be an incredible championship fight and a memorable main event.”

Palhares signed with WSOF in November following a 12-fight stint with MMA’s premier organization, the UFC. The UFC released him following an October win over Mike Pierce in which the Brazilian was slow to release a potentially dangerous heel-hook submission.

It was the second such incident of Palhares’ UFC run. The 33-year-old, who quickly became the target of fans and fellow fighters’ criticism, has since admitted fault and apologized for his actions. Palhares also sought the counseling of highly respected MMA legend Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira and has promised to avoid any future incidents.

Meanwhile, Carl has already fought three times for WSOF while tapping out Ramico Blackmon and Tyson Steele, each via rear-naked choke, before putting Burkman to sleep with a triangle choke to claim the belt.

Look at some of the cans he fought between losing to Lima and beating Burkman. He has the easiest path to the belt. He would lose to a washed up Jon Fitch.

steve carl is not a top striker. his wrestling is not that great. Rousimar should be ranked above him and be in the UFC

What did Carl say to you on twitter?

he called me a "Chump" and a "keyboard warrior" because I called him out for saying he wanted Rousimar to earn his title shot and then later he accepted the fight. Like KSW (the org) and Jon Fitch he was using the bad press surrounding Rousimar to make a headline and to promote himself.

I don't think Steve Carl is that good personally. Forgetting the Pierce controversial stoppage....how amazing did Rousimar look at 170 and under his new team at Team Nogueira.....BTT is stuck in the past.....Team Nogueira is a more professional team with better facilities and professional coaches.

Honestly can't blame anyone who doesn't want to work with Palhares. Holding on to submissions is pretty disgusting imo. I don't know if he means to or not but ignorance shouldn't excuse it.

I don't know Stu, I think he's good. He finished Burkman after Burkman was on a tear and was coming off a win over Fitch.

I wouldn't be shocked if Palhares subs him but I think Carl will take this. I like Palhares and it would be cool to see him with the belt.

Palhares did dominate Pierce and he is a great sub fighter but Carl dominated Burkman who was on a tear.

I don't agree! IMO burkman was on a tear for sure! Gerald Harris is not a walk in the park and say whatever you want about Fitch, he is a good fighter!

And Carl won a close fight but did sub burkman, but I agree palhares is a whole different animal!

He will get a hold of a limb like no other does!

Harris and Fitch were real good wins for Burkman, especially the way he fought. He subbed the unsubbable fitch, something Maia couldn't even do. After that tear, Carl took him out by finishing him. Pretty impressive.

I like Palhares and wouldn't mind seeing him get the sub win here but I think this going to be a tough fight for him.

Stu, i think its that Palhares is fucking random... I like the guy but seriously his fight IQ is so low. He lost a few fights because of horrible mistakes , but i think he is awesome . I like specialists and Palhares heel hooks are brutal. On the other hand Palhares last fight was a bullshit reason to be booted from the UFC he had some fights where he fucked up but what the fuck... Why are the refs not doing their job anyway.

I hope he wins and wins clean... he is a beast and one of a kind.
