Great to see Askren already defending the belt. I think he takes this one. Hope his striking on the ground continued improvement like in the last fight. Askren with vicious GNP could be unstoppable.

Until I see Hendricks knocking out GSP, I have to agree.

This will be both guys biggest test.

For me it's a real treat because Koreshkov is by far a better striker than either GSP or Hendricks and Askren is a better technical 'pure' wrestler than GSP. This is what MMA 'was' really about. Two technical experts in different areas trying to force their opponent to fight their fight. Whoever wins we all get to see exceptional technical striking & grappling. Not so much of this today.

Evolution to poor boxing/kickboxing with marginal grappling with no submission is not evolving in my books. Thank you Belator!!!

Bellator 97: Askren vs Koreshkov - July 31 (Official Discussion) Empty Re: Bellator 97: Askren vs Koreshkov - July 31 (Official Discussion)

Bellator welterweight champ Ben Askren (11-0 MMA, 8-0 BFC) puts his title on the line against Andrey Koreshkov (13-0 MMA, 5-0 BFC) on Wednesday, July 31 as the promotion visits Albuquerque's Santa Ana Center.

The event, which is expected to serve as "Bellator 97: Askren vs. Koreshkov," is the second announced card for the company's upcoming Summer Series.

Additionally, Bellator's Season 8 welterweight tournament final takes place at Bellator 97 as finalists Douglas Lima (24-5 MMA, 6-1 BFC) and Ben Saunders (16-5-2 MMA, 7-2 BFC) finally meet after Lima's broken hand forced a delay in the bout earlier this year. And featherweight Patricio "Pitbull" Freire (17-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC) meets seven-time UFC veteran Rob Emerson (12-10 MMA, 0-0 BFC)

Askren enters the fight with a perfect career mark and hopes to defend his title for a fourth consecutive time.

"I'm really looking forward to getting back into that cage and putting on a show," Askren stated in an official announcement. "I feel like I've continued to mature and get better in every one of my fights, and July 31st should be no different. I don't think Andrey has any ability to stop my wrestling and ground attack, so this will be another successful title defense."

Meanwhile, the 22-year-old Koreshkov gets his title shot after earning a Season 7 tournament victory with wins over the likes of Lyman Good, Marius Zaromskis and Jordan Smith.

"I'll be 110 percent ready for this fight," Koreshkov stated. "I'll make sure that Askren's tactics to put everybody in the audience to sleep won't work this time. Instead, I'll keep everybody entertained by putting him to sleep."

As with all of Bellator's Summer Series events, Bellator 97 airs on Spike TV, and the prelims stream on Spike.com. The evening's main card starts at a special time of 7 p.m. ET (5 p.m. MT local time), and the prelims begin one hour earlier.

Well, there's no doubt that Askren/Koreshkov will be a much higher level fight, but I just think Hendricks putting an end to GSP's reign will be a much larger story.

I think Askren will take out Koreshkov.  It would be cool to see Koreshkov take the belt but Askren is going to be tough as hell.  I still think Lima has the best shot of the Bellator fighters at taking out Askren.  Hope he gets by Saunders again and gets the rematch.

Bellator 97: Askren vs Koreshkov - July 31 (Official Discussion) Empty Re: Bellator 97: Askren vs Koreshkov - July 31 (Official Discussion)

Bellator’s heavyweight and light heavyweight Summer Series tournaments will conclude on July 31, when Ryan Martinez faces Vitaly Minakov and Muhammed Lawal meets Jacob Noe at Bellator 97.

The event airs live on Spike TV and is headlined by a lightweight title collision pitting reigning champion Michael Chandler against Season 8 tournament winner David Rickels. The event takes place at the Santa Ana Star Center in Albuquerque, N.M., and will also see Ben Askren defend his welterweight strap against unbeaten Season 7 champ Andrey Koreshkov.

The Summer Series tournament finals were decided on Wednesday night at Bellator 96, which took place at the Winstar World Casino in Thackerville, Okla., and saw “King Mo” knock out Seth Petruzelli in the evening’s main event on Spike TV. Just prior to Lawal’s 95-second finish of “The Silverback,” Noe sent former UFC title contender Renato Sobral into retirement, picking up a third-round technical knockout over “Babalu” to advance in the 205-pound draw.

Meanwhile, Minakov wasted no time in punching his ticket to the heavyweight finals, as the unbeaten Russian pounded out Ron Sparks in just 32 seconds. Earlier, Martinez did the same to Rich Hale, taking his smaller opponent to the mat before crushing him with ground-and-pound to earn his spot in the championship round.

This is probably the most stacked card Bellator has had since the Alvarez/Aoki II card.

This is one of their best.  They need to go back to Thurs. nights though, after TNA, to get their ratings back up.  This card shouldn't be missed.

Whats the reason for switching back to FRiday? This is a big mistake imo.

Not sure why they are doing that but I agree, moving to Fridays is a big mistake.  Friday nights for this demographic is one of the worst for ratings.

A few weeks back Spike TV executive Kevin Kay said they weren’t sure which night of the week the Bellator cards would be on Spike, but to check back because they were deciding soon. As it turns out, Bellator is headed back to Friday nights. Bellator had a brief run on Friday nights when they were on MTV and the numbers rarely cracked 200k, but according to Kay the MTV numbers don’t really apply. Kay says it all came down to a process of elimination as they didn’t want to go up against the UFC on Wednesday nights or the NFL on Thursday nights.

Kay told Sports Illustrated:

“I don’t want to see Bellator going head to head with the UFC. I don’t think that makes any sense for fans. No matter who would win in that scenario, you don’t want to not give the fans the choice to watch both.”

“The Ultimate Fighter on Fridays was doing over a million viewers a week. I’ll take that, and with live fights, I think we’ll do even better. There’s a lot of young men at home across [the] 18-49 [age demographic]. Gold Rush on Discovery does 4 million viewers on Friday nights. [The viewers] are there. You just have to give them the right thing and I think live fights on Friday, without competition, is going to be the best place for Bellator.”

I would also love this. Koreshkov is possibly my favorite WW in Bellator (WHO SHOULD BE IN THE TOP 10 RANKINGS DAMMIT! Bellator 97: Askren vs Koreshkov - July 31 (Official Discussion) 3973136183 ) and his striking is some of the best at WW. The way he destroyed Marius had me like Shocked .

I just don't know how he'll do against Askren's takedowns. I want him to do well, but I don't see it happening. Part of this is the reason i want to see Askren challenge GSP in the UFC. If the Bellator WW title opens up and a guy like Koreshkov gets it.. there are SO many amazing matchups to be made.. and with that, we get to see Askren really test himself against GSP.

But as usual, I'm most anticipating the Minakov fight. I just love watching this guy evolve as a fighter. Martinez seems to of found his KO power in his last to fights, and striking defense is the only area I have doubts about Minakov.. but I expect a sambo clinic. I have such high hopes for this guy -- he is by far (in my eyes) the #1 MMA prospect right now.

It is also going to be interesting to see Chandler back in the cage against a game fighter like Rickels. Will be a good indication of where Chandler is really at in the LW picture as a whole (UFC included)

What a card. Shame we can't see Baca/Leone, regardless of Baca being a natural flyweight.
