Report: Bellator 120 PPV buys estimated at 65,000 for 'Rampage vs. King Mo' Empty Report: Bellator 120 PPV buys estimated at 65,000 for 'Rampage vs. King Mo'

Tue May 27, 2014 3:24 pm
Bellator MMA finally made its pay-per-view (PPV) debut with "Rampage vs. King Mo," which took place back on May 17, 2014, inside Landers Center in Southaven, Mississippi (results). It was a card the promotion asked you to pay anywhere from $35-$50 for, depending on your location and PPV provider.

So, how many fight fans opened their wallets?

According to Dave Meltzer (via Fight Opinion), Bellator pulled in roughly 65,000 PPV buys, which is above the 50,000 number thought to be the "break even" mark. Keep in mind this is also a card that lost the Eddie Alvarez vs. Michael Chandler trilogy when Alvarez got hurt and was forced to withdraw.

That left the light heavyweight contest between Quinton Jackson and Muhammed Lawal -- as well as the freak show fight pitting Tito Ortiz against Alexander Villechaize Shlemenko -- to carry the card, which had a strong lead-in from its Spike TV "Prelims," featuring Cheick Kongo and Marcin Held, among others.

Now what?

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney has already threatened promised to air another PPV event when the time -- and the roster -- is right, which could become more difficult after Will Brooks upset Chandler earlier this month. which put "Alvarez vs. Chandler 3" on ice for the foreseeable future.

Or not.

No.surprise I knew it was gonna be bad didn't even break 100,000 buys....

They did better then breaking even but not by much.

Next ppv shouldn't be based on 1 fight.

Nice to see they broke even apparently. I'll be honest, 65,000 isn't bad since I thought they get 30,000 or 40,000. 100,000 was wishful thinking. Rampage, Mo, Chandler, and Tito were the only name fighters on this show. I like Page, Rainey, Volkov, Ivanov, Shlemenko, and Brooks but average fans don't know who they are. Losing the main event 8 days before the show didn't help.

I think this could've gotten 80 to 100k with Alvarez/Chandler III.

Like it's been said, it's ultimately good that they broke even. Definitely worth another shot.

I could see them unfortunately taking a more pro wrestling type of approach on their PPV product. Expect the Spike broadcasts to still have the occasional title bout and tournaments but ultimately they'll start putting their most important finals and championships on an end of the season PPV. This could lead to very successful product, in theory.
