"Tobikan Judan" is back at 155 pounds ... but for how long?

Since Shinya Aoki became the ONE FC lightweight champion -- by submitting Kotetsu Boku last year -- he has fought for the promotion at 145 pounds and appeared on the IGF New Year's Eve card, but he has yet to make the first defense of his 155-pound title.
There is still uncertainty as to whether Aoki intends to make featherweight his permanent home, but the former DREAM and Shooto champion is finally ready to defend his ONE FC lightweight belt. According to Evolve MMA Head Coach Heath Sims he will be returning to the cage in August for what will be his fourth fight for Asia's biggest MMA promotion.
"Shinya has a fight booked for August and it's going to be a title defence. He will be arriving in Singapore next month to do a full fight camp with the team of world champions trainers at Evolve MMA" he told MMA Mania.
Aoki's three ONE FC fights to date have all taken place in Singapore, but the organization was there as recently as May. It's unlikely that another show would be booked in the same country so soon, but Sims says he;s not allowed to discuss where the forthcoming title match will be.
"You will have to wait for ONE FC to make an announcement. I can't tell you where the fight will be or who the opponent is but the fight is signed," he said.
Possible contenders to face Aoki include Kamal Shalorus and Lowen Tynanes, who are both 2-0 for ONE FC, Vuyisile Colossa, who has gone 3-1, and Eduard Folayang, who is 4-2, with the latter pair both coming off back-to-back wins.
While Sims is keeping tight-lipped about the identity of Aoki's opponent, he was willing to be more expansive on the subject of whether the fighter plans to remain at 155 pounds for the foreseeable future or extend the experiment that saw him drop down to featherweight to face Cody Stevens last year.
"That was his first fight at 145 lbs and it definitely wasn't Shinya's best performance but I thought he looked great up until he got caught by a really hard knee to the groin. After that he seemed more reluctant to engage in the striking and reverted back to his old grappling style."
After submitting Arnaud Lepont and Boku in his first two ONE FC fights, Aoki went the distance with Stevens and even though he came away with the decision win, Sims says he is not certain whether or not it will be his last fight at 145 lbs,
"He had no problem making the weight and his size and reach will pose problems for anyone in the 145 lbs division but he holds a belt at 155 lbs and he has won all his recent fights so if he wants to stay at 155 lbs it's not a problem, it's really up to Shinya to decide where he feels most comfortable and where he thinks the best matchups are going to be."
Aoki's striking looked very crisp in the early exchanges of his bout with Stevens, but he seemed to lose a lot of confidence after the lengthy interruption following the break due to the low blow. Sims think that the Japanese veteran, who scored an unlikely knockout of UFC veteran Antonio McKee at DREAM 18, is much more comfortable with this area of the game then he gets credit for,
"Shinya works a lot with Muay Thai world champion Orono Wor Petchpun at Evolve MMA and his striking has improved beyond all recognition. It's still a work in progress and he gets better all the time but Shinya is not just a pure grappler anymore, he is a real mixed martial artist who is dangerous everywhere."
ONE FC's next stop is Taiwan on July 11th with local media in Cambodia claiming that a September 12th event is confirmed for Phnom Penh, but there is currently no word on where the August card will be taking place.

Probably Shalorus. Folayang shouldn't be anywhere near a title and Tynanes has dropped off the face of the earth.

ONE FC, Asia’s biggest MMA promotion, has just announced that they will be holding their 1st show in Dubai on the 29th of August. The promotion has also announced that the event will feature 4 world championship bouts. Sources close to the situation have confirmed with us that two of those title bouts will be for the ONE FC Lightweight and Welterweight titles respectively.
It has already been confirmed that ONE FC Lightweight Champion Shinya Aoki will be defending his title at the August event. However, our sources have confirmed that he will be defending his title against highly decorated wrestler Kamal Shalorus.
Aoki won the ONE FC Lightweight title from Kotetsu Boku in April last year. Aoki dominated the Krazy Bee fighter and managed to submit him in the second round. Aoki has since defeated Cody Stevens in his featherweight debut and Toshikatsu Harada at IGF’s New Year’s Eve show last year. This will be Aoki’s first title defense at 155lbs. His opponent Shalorus has been dominant in ONE FC thus far. The former WEC and UFC fighter has defeated Eduard Folayang and Ariel Sexton in dominating fashion. It goes without saying that his title shot is well deserved.
The event will also see ONE FC Welterweight Champion Nobutatsu Suzuki defend his title against one of the best welterweights in the world, “Funky” Ben Askren. Suzuki, who is ONE FC’s first ever welterweight champion, defeated Bellator veteran Brock Larson to capture the gold earlier this year. He’s going to face a huge challenge when he goes one on one with former Bellator champion Ben Askren. Askren has had his eye on the gold the moment he signed with ONE FC and it seems that nothing will stop him till he has it around his waist. Askren made his ONE FC debut at Honor & Glory and defeated Bakhtiyar Abbasov with ease in the 1st round. Askren rolls into the fight with a perfect 13-0 fight record.
ONE FC’s first ever show in Dubai will be held at the iconic Dubai World Trade Centre. Stay tuned for more updates on this huge fight card.

ONE FC, Asia’s biggest MMA promotion, has just made a ground breaking announcement. The promotion has just confirmed via its Facebook page that it will be holding its first show in Dubai on the 29th of August 2014.
“BREAKING NEWS: ONE Fighting Championship, Asia’s largest sports media property, will be hosting its 1st event in Dubai, UAE on August 29 with 4 world championship title bouts on the card at the iconic Dubai World Trade Centre.”
Fans can definitely expect one of the title fights to be between Shinya Aoki and an unnamed opponent. It will also be interesting to see if Nobutatsu Suzuki vs Ben Askren for the ONE FC Welterweight title also makes it to the card. Given that the promotion has already confirmed 4 title fights, it will most likely happen.
ONE FC will also be holding its first event in Taiwan next week as well as its first show in Cambodia this coming September. The promotion has already ran sold out shows in countries like Singapore, Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia.

Excellent start for the card. Surprised they'd expand to Dubai before China and South Korea.

Good card. Great to see Aoki finally defending the title. Hopefully he'll do it more often. Oishi/Kelly should be fun.

I don't think Askren could make but Aoki has had a past at 170. Good suggestion, otherwise. What a technical showcase that would be.

I was hinting at champ vs champ as I assume askren will win.
But at anyweighy I'd watch that fight.
I really think it would be a fight of the year candidate.or the sloppyest standup ever j/k

Askren/Aoki can be good but I think it will be another GSP/BJ type thing where the lightweight is too small against the welterweight.
