OneFC / ESPN Star deal solid with News Corp Empty OneFC / ESPN Star deal solid with News Corp

Wed Jun 06, 2012 10:58 pm
News hit today that News Corp., the media holding company owned by Rupert Murdoch, purchased the 50% stake it does not already own of ESPN STAR, from The Disney Co. In an interesting twist, Fox will continue to use the ESPN name, but that is likely to change. Certain guidelines require Fox to follow these tenants rather strictly.

OneFC, meanwhile, has a 10 year deal with ESPN STAR that will remain solid, sources reported to MMA-JAPAN. The contract was reportedly worded with the inclusion of this language, due to the fact that half of the company was projected to be purchased by Fox.

With Fox being the new home of the UFC, some eyebrows were raised at the deal and whether Fox would continue with OneFC. So for now, it seems the two could likely share the home, which would make Fox an MMA empire, even more than it already is.

OneFC signed a eye popping 10 year deal worth an undisclosed amount in 2011. OneFC and the UFC are the only two promotions that have a presence with a major network, having a far reach within television sets amongst their respective footprint.

I do not approve, for political reasons.

Somebody tell Victor Cui.

Good to hear their TV deal is still in place. Crazy that UFC and ONE FC will be carried on the same network even if it is just in Asia.

I am sure Dana will wine, pout, kick, scream, and cry about that but hopefully FOX will just tell him to shut the f**k up.

I wouldn't be too surprised. Hopefully that is not the case. I know Zuffa will try to do whatever they can to get ONE FC off FOX network.

1 -- I have a statement from Victor Cui, which should be up on ADCC News shortly, calling this "fantastic news." It only solidifies ESPN STAR, and does not affect their ten-year deal.

2 -- ONE FC's deal is with ESPN STAR Sports, not all of News Corp. all around the world. UFC's is with Fox in the U.S. Even all the 28 networks of ESPN STAR show different programming in their regions and countries, based on preference. You see lots of cricket in India, for example, but not lots of MLB baseball and NFL football, and vice versa for Fox/FX/Fuel in the U.S.

3 -- Whether Zuffa tries to leverage its Fox deal to get international exposure remains to be seen. So far their ratings collapse in the U.S. wouldn't exactly make the News Corp. people rush to put them on in Asia.

4 -- In the end, it's all about ratings. Whoever gets ratings gets pushed, whoever does not gets dumped.

Good to hear their TV deal won't be effected.
