Global-MMA Ranking Update Summary (August 2013)

Sergei Kharitonov: Sergei Kharitonov dropped two more spots, to number 8, in the heavyweight rankings on 07 July 2013 due to inactivity.  Kharitonov has not competed in MMA in over 13 months and he currently has no MMA fights scheduled.  Kharitonov’s next bout will be in GLORY on 28 September 2013 where he is scheduled to compete in a kickboxing bout against Jerome Le Banner.  Kharitonov will continue his descent in the heavyweight rankings if he does not schedule an MMA fight soon.

Aleksandar Radosavljevic: Aleksandar Radosavljevic retired from the sport of MMA and was removed from the light heavyweight rankings on 07 July 2013.  Raphael Davis returned to the light heavyweight contenders list following the removal of Radosavljevic.

Paul Daley: Paul Daley moved one step closer to the welterweight top 5 after finishing Lukasz Chlewicki with an elbow strike which forced the doctor to call a halt to the bout at the end of the first round at CWFC 57 on 20 July 2013.  Daley now sits at number 6 in the division.

Will Brooks: Will Brooks moved up one spot in the lightweight contenders list after finishing Cris Leyva with ground-and-pound punches in the third round at Bellator 97 on 31 July 2013.

Anthony Leone: Anthony Leone moved up one spot in the Global-MMA bantamweight top 10 by finishing Frank Baca in the third round with a rear-naked-choke submission at Bellator 97.  Leone will move on to the Bellator bantamweight tournament finals and now sits at number 8 in the division.

Patricio Freire: Patricio “Pitbull” Freire put on a striking clinic, finishing Jared Downing with punches early in the second round at Bellator 97.  Freire jumped to number 2 in the featherweight rankings with the impressive victory.

Vitaly Minakov: Russian heavyweight sambo champion, Vitaly Minakov, defeated top 7 ranked Ryan Martinez with vicious punches from the mount position in the third round at Bellator 97 to remain undefeated.  The heavyweight tournament victory earned Minakov a shot at the Bellator heavyweight title against champion and fellow Russian fighter Alexander Volkov.  Minakov jumped to the number 7 spot in the Global-MMA heavyweight rankings with the tournament victory over the ranked contender Martinez.

Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal: Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal wrapped up the Bellator light heavyweight Summer Series tournament with another ground-and-pound finish as he took out Jacob Noe in the third round at Bellator 97.  “King Mo” earned a title shot against the winner of top ranked Emanuel Newton and reigning Bellator champion Attila Vegh.  “King Mo” moved into the number 2 spot in the light heavyweight division with the tournament victory.  Jacob Noe dropped one spot in the contenders list following the loss as he now hangs on to the last spot in the light heavyweight rankings.

Ben Askren: Bellator champion and top ranked welterweight, Ben Askren, made easy work of Andrey Koreshkov, finishing the Russian contender with ground-and-pound punches in the fourth round at Bellator 97.  Askren’s grappling game proved to be way too much for Koreshkov to handle as the Russian striker was dominated on the ground from bell to bell.  Askren maintained his top spot with the victory.  Koreshkov kept his spot in the contenders list after falling to the champion.

Michael Chandler: Top ranked lightweight and Bellator champion, Michael Chandler, defended his crown with a brutal knockout finish of top 10 ranked David Rickels in round number one at Bellator 97.  Chandler and Rickels remained in their ranking spots after the fight.

* A number of other top ranked fighters won fights against fighters ranked lower than them which did not alter their ranking status.

Global-MMA Ranking Rules

*This ranking system includes fighters that are not under exclusive contract to the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC).

*Top level fighters that leave the UFC may be ranked in subsequent rankings.

*Fighters that sign exclusively to the UFC will be removed from the rankings.

*Rankings are based on a fighter's overall career results and recent performance.

*A fighter will be ranked number one if he defeats the number one ranked fighter in the weight division except under certain rare circumstances where the number two ranked fighter clearly deserves to move into the number one ranking position.

*Victories over highly ranked fighters and losses against non-ranked opponents have a larger effect on the fighters ranking position.

*A fighter will not necessarily take the place of his opponent in the rankings after a victory or a loss.

* A fighter can move up a maximum of three spots with impressive victories over a fighter ranked below him; however, there is no limit if the fighter earned a title or a tournament championship with the victory.

* An unranked newly crowned champion who earned a title in a major league MMA promotion can enter the top ten even with a victory over an unranked fighter.

*A fighter will drop in the rankings if he does not fight regularly against high level competition.

*A top ten ranked fighter can become ranked in another weight division after one or more wins in his new weight class.

*A fighter can be ranked in two different weight divisions.

*Champions and fighters from prominent promotions will have an advantage over champions and fighters from promotions with lesser competition.

*A fighter will be removed from the rankings if he does not fight for two years.

*Fighters that are signed to multiple promotions will have their promotions listed based on the following criteria: 1) championship held in a promotion, 2) predominant promotion the fighter fights in, 3) promotion
last fought in.

*Rankings will be updated every month.

Yup, definitely going to add Mutapcic and Taylor if they win their next fights at WSOF in the tournament.

Gaethje will move into the top 10 (three spot jump) if he wins his next fight as well.

Newell could be a contender at LW but I have a list of LWs standing in line.  LW division is stacked like no other.

Yeah, Robichaux could be one to watch for at FLW.  wekka should add him to his watch list.  He's a tough fighter.  I've seen him fight a few times with Bellator and LFC.

I keep dropping Sergei.  He's down to number 8.  I'm waiting to here if he will be taking part in any GLORY/Bellator fights before getting rid of him completely.  If he doesn't fight by NYE, he will be removed.

Thanks for the comments.

Yeah, Villefort could be a contender at MW.  He has Mutapcic and Taylor ahead of him right now on the watch list.  We'll see how things go in this WSOF tournament.

I went in and edited Junior Flyweight, since Taiki Tsuchiya and Yoshifumi Nakamura, not to be confused with Jun "Requiem" Nakamura, are featherweights.

I have Robichaux at the bottom rung of the watch list ladder. He has an attractive record, but he definitely needs to bulk up his resume before he moves over some of the names ahead of him.

Nice, would be cool if he's on it.  I was expecting him on the ONE FC card coming up but that card is so damn weak, not surprised he's not on it.  I think Rolles should be ahead of Graham in the top 16 - 20.  I had Rolles in the rankings before but he fell off with all the new additions to HW lately.

That past win over him definitely does make a difference.  If Rolles wins that fight will get him in the top 13, 14, or 15 depending on how impressive he is.

If Rolles wins, he'll get in for sure (or if Ka loses at M-1 coming up, Rolles will be in).  Rolles will just bump the number 15 out.  He deserves it since I had him ranked before and he is a top HW for both ONE FC and WSOF.

I move for the 'one year rule' just like the World Golf Rankings.

You don't fight in the past calendar year, you drop off the rankings. Whether your Tiger Woods or not. Sergei has been in active for 14 months. Seems stupid he's in our top 10 HW's and he don't really fight no more. We get that kind comment from people on other forums too.

I'm not quite understanding how Gafurov is ahead of Choi.

Yeah, I think he deserved it after that last win and Georgi hasn't done much in a while. If Kawajiri gets a win soon, he will be passing him up as well soon, unless Georgi signs somewhere and gets a win.
