Bellator signs Russian heavyweight prospect Ruslan Magomedov
Mon Apr 09, 2012 5:49 pm
Russian heavyweight Ruslan Magomedov (7-1 MMA, 0-0 BFC) is the latest addition to the Bellator Fighting Championships roster.
MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today confirmed the signing with sources close to the once-beaten prospect.
Magomedov's debut fight has yet to be scheduled, but he could fight in a season-six non-tournament fight.
At 6-foot-4, the striking specialist has the size to compete in the sport's top promotions, and Bellator gives him an opportunity to make a name for himself in the sport. He recently downed former UFC champ Ricco Rodriguez in a three-round decision win at United Glory 15, giving Magomedov the first "name" victory of his career.
Ruslan has fought exclusively in Russia and Ukraine this far in his career, which already includes four wins by knockout, two via decision and one b way of submission.

Another solid signing for Bellator. Hopefully they have a HW tournament in their summer series.

I was hoping he would fight for the M-1 title but Bellator is also great.

A big double-edged sword here guys.
At first I liked the idea of Bellator of competing against the UFC with the big Viacom dollars. After the past few months of their assault the Russian western front though... I am becoming increasingly more alarmed,
1. Do we really want to see very technically talent kick boxers/submission wrestlers come to America only to fight in an unfair wrestler-advantaged cage?
2. Do we really want to see Russia's best and deadliest fighting under modified-boxing rules? Do we really want to see that???... instead of Russian rules where they are forced to attempt submissions or forced posture up to strike with full-force shots that have the capability of KO'ing their opponent on the ground.
3. Do we really want to see the highly-skilled cream of the crop Russian fighters forced to become 'point fighters'?
4. Do we really want to see these dynamics Russian studs be endlessly immobilized in a stalemate by their opponents while their opponents run out the clock?
5. How is any of this really good in the long run for MMA? The same UFC/cage/unified rules style of fighting, amirite? This will just continue to spread the homogenization of MMA across the globe and strip foreign nations of the uniquely skilled talent of their regional MMA culture.
Ugh...... I'm getting tired. I'm not so sure I want to see more Bellator conquests.

Some good points. I do like Bellator and they are building a real nice stable of fighters. I wish M-1 and KSW would match their efforts at least.

Great signing by Bellator. I have more faith in these Russian fighters, they seem to be more complete and better than the local products and UFC rejects.
What worries me though is how will Bellator's American viewers react when all of Bellator's champions are Russian's/Europeans who arent normally very gifted in shit talking and hyping the fight up. Americans are very patriotic and this might backfire on Bellator.

Good point but as long as the best fighters are holding the titles hopefully that is what matters most. UFC has Brazilian Jose Aldo, Canadian GSP, Brazilian A. Silva, and Brazilian JDS all holding titles. All are foreign fighters and none of them hardly shit talk. The best holding the titles is what matters more.
