Floyd Mayweather vs. Conor McGregor - August 26th (OFFICIAL DISCUSSION)

What began as talk for a fight many perceived as impossible between a boxing legend and the biggest star in mixed martial arts is now a reality.

Former pound-for-pound king and five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. made the official announcement on social media Wednesday, confirming that he will exit a 23-month retirement at age 40 to face Conor McGregor, the UFC superstar, in a boxing match on Aug. 26 in Las Vegas.

And in the slightest of chances conor wins......it only helps legitimize the striking of mma fighters to a crossover audience potentially.

Imo i think the entire main card should be boxers vs mma guys it could be a real fun event.

McGregor is getting 75 million for the bout (that's what I read) he will be set for life so he is smart in that regard but at the end of the day mayweather will pick him apart .

I am looking forward to it.  I know Mayweather is a huge favorite but if some how Conor was able to catch him, it would be crazy.  Plus, weeks ago it was announced Conor would get $75M for this fight which could be more now.  They are expecting somewhere in the range of Mayweather/Pac type numbers where Mayweather received $250M and sold 4.6M PPVs. It will probably be less but even half that would be insane money which is why this deal got done. UFC/Showtime, Conor and Mayweather will be making a ton of cash off this.

Luke Thomas is an Eddie Goldman wanna be and only started being interested in other combat sports three years ago in order to be a hipster and talk down to his followers on his then new podcast, but he brings up some interesting points here.

McGregor said this week that he stepped up his sparring to four times the sparring for his MMA fights. He is getting a lot of ring time to prepare but he is going up against the best boxer of this era so it is going to be extremely tough on him for sure.

McGregor's an idiot. Punching is not the same as boxing. I'm sorry. Boxing is a sport that has had at least 200 plus years to develop as a niche sport in the West. I mean, I'm a martial artist and combat sports fan and I study boxing tutorials every now and then and can barely understand what they are going on about. They have a real niche going on that you can't just jump into. This'll be like CM Punk in MMA all over again, only worse.

The worst part is, is that Floyd Mayweather is one of the last descendents and practitioners of true Black Boxing: A defensive style developed to minimize damage (as black boxers way back when had a highly demanding fight schedule). McGregor's gonna be punching air before he gets KO'd.

Could be, unless he lands that lucky shot somehow. I've seen MMA fighters have some success in kickboxing fights but not against the talents in boxing of someone like Mayweather who is the best of the era.

I could be crazy, but I'm actually beginning to lean toward McGregor.

I'd like to discuss this more as I think about it, but just a couple points, Mayweather is not actually the best of his era--he is one of the best--but he is also not an active fighter, he is a retired former boxer, who is 40, and riddled with injuries from an entire lifetime in the sport.

He has had well known hand problems his entire pro career, and he's had a history of shoulder injuries as well.

McGregor is a professional fighter in his prime.

McGregor became a joke because the UFC made him a poster child, but it was our circle and TeamTakeover, which was talking about McGregor before he was even known in the US. (There was a thread about him titled "The Irish Nick Diaz".)

Marcos Maidana showed how to beat Mayweather. Face forward brawling in his face. The exact strategy everyone expects McGregor to pursue, and which they expect to be a complete failure.

That was against a younger, more active Mayweather.

This fight is a month away and I can't stand it anymore after two days of the media tour. All the fucking MMA sites are talking about is this and they just shove it down your throat. I don't care how much you hype it, I'm not spending $100 on this and I don't care. I rather see McGregor defend the Lightweight Title. So sick of going on social media and you get nothing but this fight. We got UFC events still to come this month, a Bellator event, a ONE event, and a Rizin event. Let's talk about those.

I just feel the boxing skill level of Mayweather is on another level from McGregor but it would be a shock to see McGregor pull off the huge upset. He would need to land and put the lights out to do it. It would be unreal.

I remember that McGregor thread a long time ago. We use to watch his fights in Europe and he smoked everyone and held two belts. Was a big fan of his then. Never thought he'd be fighting Mayweather in boxing.

My nephews and I are splitting the cost and buying this one.

There definitely needs to be more coverage of Rizin and Bellator for sure.

Not only that but what does it say that Dana is promoting this fight and barely paying attention to the upcoming UFC shows? Why is he still around especially when this fight was signed after he was kicked to the curb?

He is front and center in their world tour shows which are pretty interesting. Last one is coming up in London.
