GLOBAL-MMA Ranking Update Summary (May 2012)


D.J. Linderman: Former Bellator light heavyweight, D.J. Linderman, fell out of the rankings following a unanimous decision loss to previously unranked fighter Moise Rimbon at Instinct MMA: Instinct Fighting 3. Rimbon entered the list of contenders due to the victory.

Masakatsu Ueda: Japanese bantamweight star Masakatsu Ueda dropped to the ninth spot after losing a unanimous decision to Travis Marx at Bellator 64 on 06 April 2012. Travis Marx entered the top 10 rankings due to the victory landing a spot at number 6.

Douglas Lima: Douglas Lima dropped one spot in the welterweight rankings after losing a unanimous decision to top ranked Bellator champion Ben Askren at Bellator 64. Askren remains the top welterweight in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings.

Marlon Sandro: Marlon Sandro walked away with a close split decision victory over Alexandre Bezerra at Bellator 64 but his featherweight ranking status was not changed.

Rodrigo Lima: Hiroshi Nakamura’s decision victory over Rodrigo Lima at Bellator 64 was not enough to move him up in the bantamweight rankings. The entrance of Travis Marx forced Nakamura out of the rankings.

Todd Duffee: Todd Duffee entered the heavyweight rankings after an impressive TKO victory in just 34 seconds of the first round against hard hitting opponent Neil Grove at SFL: Super Fight League 2 on 07 April 2012. Brett Rogers dropped from the rankings following the entrance of Duffee.

Alexander Shlemenko: Number 2 GLOBAL-MMA ranked middleweight Alexander “Storm” Shlemenko dominated Super Hulk world champion Ikuhisa Minowa with a brutal knee to the chin followed by a vicious body punch on the ground at SFL: Super Fight League 2. Minowa could not make it back to his feet following the body shot so the referee was forced to call a halt to the bout in 2 minutes 20 seconds of the first round. This excellent performance cements Shlemenko’s status as one of the best middleweights in the world and reinforces the need for the rematch with Bellator champion Hector Lombard.

Marcos Galvao: Marcos Galvao jumped into the bantamweight top 10 following a unanimous decision victory over Ed West at Bellator 65 on 13 April 2012.

Luis Nogueira: Luis Nogueira moved to the number 7 bantamweight ranking by defeating Alexis Vila at Bellator 65 via unanimous decision. Alexis Vila dropped just one spot below Nogueira in the GLOBAL-MMA top ten.

Daniel Straus: Daniel Straus entered the other contenders list of the featherweight rankings by ousting Mike Corey at Bellator 65. After the very close decision loss Corey was dropped from the featherweight rankings.

Eduardo Dantas: New Bellator bantamweight king, Eduardo Dantas, earned the number 2 spot in the GLOBAL-MMA rankings after an impressive second round submission victory over Zach Makovsky at Bellator 65 on 13 April 2012. Makovsky was forced to sleep due to the deep arm-triangle choke applied by the new champion. Makovsky fell just one spot in the rankings due to the defeat.

Marcus Vanttinen: Standout light heavyweight Marcus Vanttinen slipped out of the other contenders list after dropping a decision to John Hawk at Bellator 66 on 20 April 2012. Mikhail Zayats returned to the last spot of the other contenders list following the fight.

Rick Hawn: Rick Hawn entered the lightweight top 5 after knocking out Lloyd Woodard in the second round at Bellator 66. Lloyd Woodard fell to the number 8 spot due to the knockout defeat.

Maiquel Falcao: Maiquel Falcao entered the middleweight top 10 following a decision victory over Vyacheslav Vasilevsky at Bellator 66. Falcao took the number 8 spot while Vasilevsky dropped to number 9.

Andreas Spang: Middleweight fighter Andreas Spang entered the other contenders list after knocking out Brian Rogers at Bellator 66. Rogers dropped out of the top 10 and fell into the other contenders list after the fight.

Eddie Alvarez: Eddie Alvarez took the top spot in the lightweight rankings after knocking out Shinya Aoki in the first round at Bellator 66. Alvarez leaped over the number 2 ranked Bellator champion Michael Chandler (who holds a victory over Alvarez) since he defeated the number 1 ranked fighter in the division as stated in the GLOBAL-MMA Rules. Aoki fell to number 3 following the defeat.

Hector Lombard: GLOBAL-MMA top ranked middleweight and reigning Bellator middleweight champion, Hector Lombard, was removed from the rankings after Bellator declined to match the contract offer made by the UFC on 24 April 2012. Alexander Shlemenko took the top middleweight spot following the removal of Lombard.

Damian Grabowski: Standout Polish heavyweight, Damian Grabowski, finished UFC veteran Eddie Sanchez with a kimura submission in the second round at MMAA – MMA Attack 2 on 27 April 2012. Just 7 days later Grabowski picked up his third consecutive win by defeating Dave Huckaba at Bellator 67 on 04 May 2012 by unanimous decision. Grabowski is now ranked as the number 6 GLOBAL-MMA heavyweight moving up one spot in the rankings. Grabowski holds an impressive 16-1-0 record with 14 wins coming by way of submission or (T)KO.

Bryan Baker: Bryan Baker entered into the other contenders list of the welterweight rankings by earning a unanimous decision victory over number 8 ranked Ben Saunders at Bellator 67 on 04 May 2012. This victory also earned Baker a spot in the Bellator welterweight tournament finals. Saunders has now lost two out of his last three fights. Following the defeat Saunders was removed from the welterweight rankings.

rumor on middlefeces is that: Eddie Alvarez is no longer considered a ‘Bellator fighter.’ It’s rumored that Lorenzo Fertitta and Eddie Alvarez discussed an inevitable signing to UFC which may close as soon as the end of this week. It’s also heavily rumor that a Eddie Alvarez vs. Anthony Pettis bout is being targeted for UFC 150.

I don´t think this will work. What if #1 loses to a low tier fighter, maybe by a cut or freak injury. Sometimes top guys like Mousasi fights low/mid tier fighters in DREAM etc.

The Ring crowns a champion when a #1 ranked fighter fights a #2 or #3 ranked fighter (the winner is then champ). Until this happens, the crown is vacant, so #1 ranking doesn't = champion, and beating a #1 ranked fighter doesn't equal #1. If however there is a champion, and the champion is defeated, presumably the victor gets to be champ. In principle, a champ probably shouldn't be fighting anyone outside of the top 10, so maybe if a fighter outside of top 10 pulls of a miracle, he isn't automatically champ and the title is then vacant (though he jumps up in the rankings). On this last part, I don't know how the Ring handles it, but the practice of #1 fighter vs champion is I think applicable. The Ring criteria could be used here in just the same way.

The point of a system like the Ring system is that the #1 guy isn't necessarily champ. Actually, since there is no title, it is a way to have a champ. If a champ gets beat, the guy who he lost to takes the crown, and is therefore a champ. If a #1 contender loses to a guy that's ranked #10 or something, he doesn't automatically become the #1 contender. Just how I see it anyway. I just personally see a distinction between a guy who's #1 in rankings and a champ. But you're the boss.
